Imam Ali (peace be upon him): Isa ibn Abdullah narrated from his father, from his grandfather, from Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) that he said: Parts of the Quran would abrogate other parts, and it was nothing other than the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) which concluded an abrogated verse. Among the last surahs revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) was al-Ma'ida, which abrogated what came before it and nothing abrogated it. This surah was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) while he was mounted on his grey mule (white mixed with red and black), and the revelation grew heavy upon the mule so that it stopped, its belly sagged and bent down toward the ground, to the point that I saw its navel almost brushing the earth. And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) fell unconscious, such that he placed his hand upon the forelock of Munabbih ibn Wahb al-Jumahi. Then the unconsciousness was lifted from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and he recited Surah al-Ma'ida to us, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) acted upon it and we too acted upon it.
