Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Jabir ibn Yazid al-Ju'fi narrated from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) that in the course of a long hadith describing the state of the people of Hell, he reached this point and said: Then on every branch of the tree of Zaqqum seventy thousand men are hung, such that the branches bend but do not break. Then the Fire enters through their backs and engulfs their hearts, their lips shrivel, their hearts are torn from their places, their skins are cooked, and their flesh melts. And Allah, the Ever-Living, the Everlasting, becomes wrathful and says: "O keeper of Hell! Say to them: فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِیدَکُمْ إِلَّا عَذَاباً [So taste! We shall not increase you in anything but torment]. O keeper of Hell! Kindle the fire, kindle the fire, for My wrath has intensified against those who reviled Me upon My Throne and made light of My right — and I am the Sovereign, the Compeller." At that moment the keeper of Hell calls out: "O people of misguidance and arrogance and wealth in the abode of the world! How do you find the touch of Saqar?" They say: "It has set our hearts ablaze, devoured our flesh, and shattered our bones, yet we have no one to come to our aid and no helper." The keeper of Hell says: "By the majesty of my Lord! I shall not increase you in anything but torment." They say: "If our Lord punishes us, He has not wronged us in the least." Then the keeper of Hell says: This is where they confess their sin — فَسُحْقاً لِأَصْحابِ السَّعِیرِ [So away with the companions of the Blaze!] (Al-Mulk/11) — meaning: far be the people of Hell from the mercy of Allah. Then Allah the Compeller says: "O keeper of Hell! Kindle the fire, kindle the fire." The keeper of Hell becomes wrathful and sends a black cloud toward them which casts its shadow over all the people of the Fire. Then he calls out to them in such a manner that from first to last and from far to near all of them hear, and he says: "What do you wish that I rain down upon you?" They say: "Cold water — alas for thirst, and alas for how long our humiliation has lasted!" But he rains down upon them stones, pieces of iron, hooks, pus, and worms of fire, and all this burns their faces and foreheads, blinds their eyes, and shatters their bones, and in that moment they cry out in lamentation. When their bones remain bare of flesh, the wrath of Allah grows severer, and He says: "O keeper of Hell! Set Hell ablaze upon them as firewood in the Fire." Thus the waves of the Fire strike their souls for seventy autumns in Hell, and its gates — the distance from one to another being a journey of five hundred years, and each of a thickness equal to a hundred years' journey — are shut upon them. Then each of them is placed in three coffins of fiery iron, one inside the other, such that no sound is heard from them except that they bray like mules and bray like donkeys and bark like dogs, and صُمٌّ بُکْمٌ عُمْیٌ [deaf, dumb, and blind] (Al-Baqarah/171) they utter no word except that they moan. At that moment the gates of Hell are shut upon them and its pillars are set upon them, and thus no relief reaches them and no grief departs from them, and the Fire is closed in upon them and overwhelms them. Among the angels they have no intercessor, and among the people of Paradise they have no compassionate friend, and the Lord forgets them and erases their remembrance from the hearts of the servants, so they are no longer remembered at all. So we seek refuge in Allah, the Most High, the Forgiving, the Compassionate, the Bestower.
