Imam Ali (peace be upon him): A Jewish man from the people of Yathrib went to visit the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) — every Jew in Yathrib acknowledged that he was the most learned of them, and his forefathers had been so before him. He, together with a number of his family, went to visit the Imam (peace be upon him). When they reached the great mosque of Kufa, they made their camels kneel down and stood at the door of the mosque, and sent someone into the presence of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) to say to him: "We are a group of Jews who have come from the land of Hijaz and have a question to ask you. Will you come out to us, or shall we come in to you?" The Imam (peace be upon him), while saying, "They will soon enter the religion of Islam and give me their allegiance," came out and addressed them saying: "What is your question?" Their chief said: "O son of Abu Talib (peace be upon him), what is this innovation you have brought about in the religion of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)?" The Imam (peace be upon him) said: "Which innovation?" The Jew said: "A group of the people of Hijaz claim that you went to a group of people who bore witness that there is no god but the One Allah, but did not affirm the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and you killed them by [suffocating them with] smoke!" The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to him: "I adjure you by the nine signs sent down upon Musa (peace be upon him) at Mount Sinai, and by the right of the five holy synagogues, and by the right of the Self-Sufficient, Reckoning Allah: do you know that after the death of Musa (peace be upon him) a group was brought before Yusha ibn Nun (the successor of Musa (peace be upon him)) who bore witness that there is no god but the One Allah, but did not affirm the prophethood of Musa (peace be upon him), and Yusha likewise killed them in this same manner?" The Jew said to him: "Yes! I bear witness that you are the confidant of the secrets of Musa (peace be upon him)."
