Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrates: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "Iblis — may the curse of Allah be upon him — came to Musa (peace be upon him) while he was in intimate discourse with his Lord. One of the angels said to him: 'Woe to you, O Iblis! What do you want from Musa, when he is in this state, in intimate discourse with his Lord?' Iblis said: 'I hope from him for what I hoped for from his father Adam (peace be upon him) in Paradise.' Among the things that Allah confided to Musa (peace be upon him) was this: 'O Musa! I only accept the prayer of one who is humble before My greatness, who keeps fear of Me firmly in his heart, who spends his day in remembrance of Me, who does not pass the night persisting in sin, and who knows the right of My awliya (friends) and My beloved ones.' Then Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'O my Lord! Do You mean by Your awliya and Your beloved ones, Ibrahim, Ishaq and Ya'qub (peace be upon them)?' Allah said: 'That too is so, but what I mean is the one for whose sake I created Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa, and for whose sake I created Paradise and Hell.' Then Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'Who is he, O my Lord?' Allah said: 'Muhammad Ahmad. I derived his name from My name, for I am al-Mahmud (the Praised), and he is Muhammad.' Then Musa (peace be upon him) said: 'O my Lord! Make me one of his ummah.' Allah said to him: 'O Musa! If you come to know him, and his station, and the station of his Ahl al-Bayt, you will be counted among his ummah. Indeed, the likeness of him and his household among those I have created is like the likeness of Firdaws among the other gardens of Paradise — its leaves do not scatter and its taste does not change. Whoever comes to know them and their right, I will grant him knowledge at the time of his ignorance, and I will place light before him at the time of his darkness, and I will answer him before he calls upon Me, and I will give to him before he asks Me. O Musa! When you see poverty coming toward you, say: Welcome, O emblem of the righteous; and when you see wealth coming toward you, say: This is a sin whose punishment has been hastened. O Musa! Indeed, the world is an abode of punishment. I punished Adam (peace be upon him) in it when he committed his error, and I made it accursed — accursed together with those who are in it, except what is in it that is for Me. O Musa! Indeed My righteous servants abstain from it in the measure of their knowledge of it, and the rest of My creation are drawn toward it in the measure of their ignorance. There is no one among My creation who magnifies it, sees good in it, or has his eye delighted by it [without being harmed by it]; and whoever regards it with the eye of contempt, benefits from it.'" Then Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) continued: "If you have the power not to be known and recognised, then do so; and it does no harm to you if the people do not praise you. If you are beloved before Allah, being disapproved of before the people does not distress you. Indeed, Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) used to say: 'There is no good in the world except for one of two men: a man who each day increases in doing good, and a man who makes up for his death by repentance. But how can his repentance be accepted? By Allah, if he were to prostrate until his neck were severed, Allah would not accept it from him except through the wilaya of us, the Ahl al-Bayt. Know that whoever comes to know our right and hopes for reward through [our wilaya] is content each day with food equal to half a mudd and with what covers his private parts and what shelters his head; and by Allah, they are, along with all this, in fear and dread.'"
