Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Mufaddal said: "O my master! What is the interpretation of this word of Allah: وَ قاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّی لا تَکُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَ یَکُونَ الدِّینُ لِلهِ [And fight them until there is no persecution, and religion is for Allah]?" The Imam (peace be upon him) said: "O Mufaddal! By Allah! [With the appearance of Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble return)] the differences between creeds and religions will be removed and [all creeds] will become one single religion; just as Allah said: إِنَّ الدِّینَ عِنْدَ اللهِ الْإِسْلامُ [Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam (and submission before the truth)]. (Al Imran/19) And He said: Whoever chooses other than the religion of Islam, it will not be accepted from him, and on the Day of Judgment he will be among the losers. (Al Imran/85)" Mufaddal said: "So O my chief and master! Do you say that the religion of his forefathers Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Nuh (peace be upon him), Musa (peace be upon him), Isa (peace be upon him), and Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) is Islam?" He said: "Yes! From the first of them to the last, and the proof of it is that Allah said: إِنَّ الدِّینَ عِندَ اللهِ الْاسْلَامُ [Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam], and the word of Allah the Exalted: Follow the creed of your father Ibrahim; Allah has named you 'Muslims'. (Al-Hajj/78) And among them is the saying of Allah the Exalted in the story of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Ismail (peace be upon him): Make us submitted to Your command! And from our progeny, bring forth a nation submitted to Your command! (Al-Baqara/128) And the word of the Lord the Exalted in the story of Firawn; when he was drowning [that Firawn] said: I believe that there is no god except the One in whom the Children of Israil have believed, and I am of the Muslims! (Yunus/90) And in the story of Sulayman (peace be upon him) and Bilqis, before their becoming Muslim, Bilqis said: [Now] with Sulayman I have submitted to Allah, the Lord of the worlds! (Al-Naml/44) And the word of Isa (peace be upon him) to his companions: Who will be my helper towards Allah [in propagating His religion]? The disciples [his special students] said: 'We are the helpers of Allah; we have believed in Allah, and you [also] bear witness that we are Muslims.' (Al Imran/52) And the word of Allah the Mighty and Majestic: And all who are in the heavens and the earth are submitted to [the command of] Him, willingly or unwillingly. (Al Imran/83) And the word of the Lord in the story of Lut: But We did not find in all of them except one household of believers. (Al-Dhariyat/36) And the saying of the Lord: Say: 'We have believed in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqub and the prophets from his descendants, and [likewise] what was given to Musa and Isa and the [other] prophets from their Lord, and we do not make any distinction between any of them, and we are submitted before the command of Allah — and racial prejudices and personal motives will not cause us to accept some and abandon others.' (Al-Baqara/136) And the word of Allah the Exalted: Were you witnesses when death came to Yaqub? At the time when he said to his sons: 'What will you worship after me?' They said: 'Your Allah, and the Allah of your fathers, Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq, the One Allah, and we are submitted before Him.' (Al-Baqara/133)" I said: "O my chief! How many are the creeds?" He said: "They are four sharias."
