سورة الحج

Ali ibn Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him): yastaʿjilūnaka bil-ʿadhāb [یَسْتَعْجِلُونَکَ بِالْعَذابِ — And they ask you to hasten on the punishment]; the matter is that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) informed the polytheists that [the time of] the divine punishment had come upon them; they asked: "So where is this punishment?!" and [with this speech] they asked for the punishment to be hastened.

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Abu Basir, in the course of a lengthy hadith, narrated from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) that he said: "When the Qa'im (may Allah hasten his noble relief) rises, he will set out towards Kufa and destroy four mosques there, and he will demolish every mosque on the face of the earth that has battlements and level them, and he will widen the main roads and destroy every balcony jutting out from houses onto the alleyways, and he will remove the porches of houses and the drain-pipes that face onto the alleys, and he will abolish every bid'ah (innovation) and establish every divine Sunnah, and he will conquer Constantinople, China and the chain of the Daylam mountains. In this manner he will hold the imamate for seven years, each year being equal to ten years of your years; then Allah will do whatever He wills." I said to the Imam (peace be upon him): "May I be your ransom! How will the years be made long?" He said: "Allah the Exalted will command the celestial sphere to tarry and move slowly, and as a result the days and years will become long." I said to the Imam (peace be upon him): "Some people believe that if any change occurs in the movement of the celestial sphere it will be corrupted." He said: "This is the saying of the irreligious; the Muslims do not hold such a belief, for Allah split the moon for His Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and before that He caused the sun to return for Yusha ibn Nun (peace be upon him), and He has informed us of the length of the Day of Resurrection, that it is كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ [as a thousand years of what you number]."

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Take account of yourselves [in this world] before you are called to account [on the Day of Resurrection]; for on the Day of Resurrection there are fifty stopping-places, [the time of standing at] each stopping-place being like a thousand years of what you number; then the Imam recited this verse: فِی یَوْمٍ کانَ مِقْدارُهُ خَمْسِینَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ [On a Day whose measure is fifty thousand years]. (Ma'arij/4)

The Imams (peace be upon them): One of the exhortations of Allah to Isa (peace be upon him) was that [He said to him]: "Perform worship for Me for a Day that is like a thousand years of what you number; on that Day I shall reward a good deed many times over."

The Messenger (peace be upon him and his family): Whoever enters the Fire will not come out of it until he has remained in it for many ages, and each age [in the Hereafter] is sixty and some years, and each year is three hundred and sixty days, and each day is like a thousand years of what you number; so let no one [who enters the Fire] rely on being released from the Fire.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah have mercy on him): A man asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah have mercy on him): "What is the meaning of the verse: فِی یَوْمٍ کانَ مِقْدارُهُ خَمْسِینَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ [On a Day whose measure is fifty thousand years] (Ma'arij/4), and the verse: يُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ مِنَ السَّماءِ إِلَی الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِی يَوْمٍ کانَ مِقْدارُهُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ [He directs the affairs of this world from the heavens to the earth, then it ascends to Him on a Day whose measure is a thousand years of what you number, and the world comes to an end] (Sajdah/5), and the verse: وَ یَسْتَعْجِلُونَکَ بِالْعَذابِ وَ لَنْ یُخْلِفَ اللهُ وَعْدَهُ وَ إِنَّ یَوْماً عِنْدَ رَبِّکَ کَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ?" He replied: "On the Day of Resurrection, the reckoning of fifty thousand years will be carried out."
