Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Abu Basir said: Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: "It is as though these things of the world are nothing except a deed whose good brings benefit and whose evil brings harm, except for one upon whom Allah has mercy. O seeker of knowledge, family and wealth must not distract you from attending to your own soul. The day you part from them, you are like a guest who spent the night among them and in the morning departed from them to others. This world and the hereafter are like a lodging in which you halt, then move on from it to another. And between death and the resurrection thereafter is nothing but a short sleep from which you soon awake. O seeker of knowledge, send ahead for your standing before your Lord a deed, for indeed you are pledged to your own deed, and as you act so shall you be recompensed. O seeker of knowledge, pray before you become unable to obtain a night or a day in which to pray; indeed, the likeness of prayer for its performer, by the leave of the Lord, is like a man who enters upon a sultan and the sultan listens well to his words until he finishes stating his need. Likewise the Muslim man, so long as he is in prayer, Allah continues to look upon him until he finishes his prayer. O seeker of knowledge, give sadaqah (charity) before you become unable to give anything and are prevented from giving; indeed, the likeness of sadaqah for its giver is like a man whose hand has been stained with someone's blood and whose kinsmen seek retaliation against him, and he says: 'Do not kill me and grant me some time so that I may strive to gain your satisfaction.' Such is the Muslim man too, by the leave of Allah — every time he gives a sadaqah, a knot is untied from his neck, until Allah takes back to Himself such folk while He is well pleased with them; and whomever Allah is pleased with has indeed been freed from the Fire. O seeker of knowledge, a heart in which there is nothing of the truth is like a ruined house that has no one to inhabit it. O seeker of knowledge, indeed this tongue is a key of good and a key of evil. So seal your mouth as you seal your gold and silver. These are the parables We set forth for the people, and none understand them but the learned."
