Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Zurarah said: The Imam (peace be upon him) was asked about a woman: "About a woman who leaves behind her husband, her mother and her two daughters — he answered: to the husband, one fourth; to the mother, one sixth; and the rest goes to the two daughters. And if those two daughters had been sons, still the remainder of the share would have gone to them. But if in place of the husband there had been a wife, nothing extra would have been added to her share. If the deceased leaves behind a mother and a father, or a wife and a daughter, it is obligatory that the inheritance be divided into twenty-four portions: the wife receives one eighth, which is three shares out of twenty-four; the father or mother receives one sixth, which is four shares; and the daughter receives half of the inheritance, which is twelve shares. The remainder, which is five shares, is added to the shares of the daughter and to each of the father and mother in proportion to their shares, and this remainder does not go to the wife. If the inheritance reaches the father, the mother, the wife and the daughter, once again out of twenty-four shares, the father and mother receive two sixths, which is eight shares — that is, four shares each; the wife receives one eighth, which is three shares; and the daughter receives half of the inheritance, which is twelve shares. The remainder, which is one share, goes to the daughter and to the father and mother in proportion to their shares, and nothing goes to the wife. If a woman dies and her father, her husband and her daughter inherit from her, the father inherits two shares out of twelve, which is one sixth; the husband inherits three shares out of twelve; and the daughter inherits half of the inheritance, which is six shares out of twelve. The remainder of the inheritance, which is only one share, goes to the daughter and the father in proportion to their shares, and nothing goes to the husband."
