Imam Husayn (peace be upon him): Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) addressed the soldiers of Umar ibn Sa'd and said: "If you have doubt about this hadith [that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: Hasan and Husayn are the masters of the youths of Paradise], do you also doubt that I am the son of the daughter of your Prophet (peace be upon him and his family)?! By Allah! Between the east and the west there is no son of a prophet's daughter other than me, neither among you nor among others. Woe to you! Have I killed anyone from among you that you demand his blood from me? Or have I consumed the wealth of any one of you that you demand wealth from me? Or have I wounded anyone from among you that you now wish to take retribution from me?" The soldiers fell silent and said nothing. His Eminence cried out: "O Shabath ibn Rib'i! O Hajjar ibn Abjar! O Qays ibn al-Ash'ath! O Yazid ibn al-Harith! Did you not write to me [in your letters] that our fruits have ripened and our gardens have become green and lush, and that you will arrive upon an army prepared to support you?" Qays ibn al-Ash'ath said to his Eminence: "We do not know what you are saying! But [I advise you to] accept the proposal of your cousins, for they will not do anything to you except what you would like." Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) said to them: "By Allah! I will neither give you my hand in humiliation, nor will I be obedient to you like slaves." Then he cried out: "O servants of Allah! I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning. (Ghafir/27)"
