Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Regarding the appearance of Hazrat Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble reappearance), it is narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Just as his grandfather promised in this verse: "He it is Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all religions, though the polytheists be averse." (Tawbah/33). Mufaddal said: "Master! What is the ta'wil (interpretation) of: 'that He may make it prevail over all religions, though the polytheists be averse'? (Tawbah/33)". The Imam said: "Its ta'wil is this verse: 'And fight them until there is no fitna [polytheism and the taking away of freedom], and religion [and worship] is entirely for Allah!' (Anfal/39). O Mufaddal! By Allah, He will lift disagreement from among the nations and religions, and all religions will become one, as Allah has said: 'Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam [submission before the truth].' (Al Imran/19). And He has also said: 'And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam [and submission before the command of the truth], it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.' (Al Imran/85)". Mufaddal said: "Master! Was the religion that his forefathers Ibrahim, Nuh, Musa, Isa and Muhammad (peace be upon them) held, the very same religion of Islam?" He said: "Yes, it was this very religion of Islam, nothing else!" I said: "Do you have proof from the Qur'an for this matter?" He said: "Yes, from the beginning of the Qur'an to its end is full of proof. Among them is the verse: 'Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam [submission before the truth].' (Al Imran/19). And also this verse: 'Follow the creed of your father Ibrahim; Allah named you "Muslims" in the earlier books and in this heavenly book, so that the Prophet may be a witness over you, and you witnesses over the people. So establish prayer, and give zakat, and hold fast to Allah, for He is your Master and Guardian! What an excellent Master, and what an excellent Helper!' (Hajj/78)". Mufaddal said: "Master! The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) at the time of his being sent did not prevail over all the false religions. So how does Allah say: لِیُظْهِرَهُ عَلَی الدِّینِ کُلِّهِ [that He may make it prevail over all religions]?" He said: "O Mufaddal! If the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) had, after his mission, prevailed over all religions, there would no longer be any Magian, nor Jew, nor Sabian, nor Christian, and no schism, disagreement, doubt, polytheism, idol-worship, worship of graven images, of al-Lat and al-Uzza, nor worship of the sun, the moon, the stars, fire or stones. So لِیُظْهِرَهُ عَلَی الدِّینِ کُلِّهِ — its ta'wil is today. This here is the Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble reappearance), and this is the Raj'a (Return), of which Allah says: 'And fight them until there is no fitna [polytheism and the taking away of freedom], and religion [and worship] is entirely for Allah!' (Anfal/39)". Mufaddal said: "I bear witness that you have drawn from the knowledge of Allah, have been made capable through His power and authority, speak by His decree and act by His command."
