The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family): On the Day of Resurrection, for each day of a person's life, there will be twenty-four treasuries, matching the number of hours of the night and day. On the Day of Resurrection their doors are opened. He sees one treasury filled with light and joy, and upon seeing it such gladness and joy overtakes him that, if it were distributed among the people of Hell, they would not feel the fire because of the greatness of that joy — and this is the hour in which he obeyed his Lord. Another treasury is opened, and he sees it dark, foul-smelling and terrifying; upon seeing it such sighing and lamentation overtakes him that, if it were distributed among the people of Paradise, its bounty would be spoiled for them — and this is the hour in which he disobeyed [his Lord]. Then another treasury is opened, and he finds it empty, seeing in it nothing that pleases him or displeases him — and this is the hour in which he slept or was occupied with the lawful things of the world. Then a sense of loss and regret at losing that hour overtakes him, because he had the power to fill that hour with good deeds beyond description. And it is regarding this that Allah the Exalted said: ذلِکَ یَوْمُ التَّغابُنِ [That is the Day of loss] — that day is the day of loss.
