قِیلَ فَلِمَ أُمِرَ بِدَفْنِهِ قِیلَ لِئَلَّا یَظْهَرَ النَّاسُ عَلَی فَسَادِ جَسَدِهِ وَ قُبْحِ مَنْظَرِهِ وَ تَغَیُّرِ رِیحِهِ وَ لَا یَتَأَذَّی بِهِ الْأَحْیَاءُ بِرِیحِهِ وَ بِمَا یَدْخُلُ عَلَیْهِ مِنَ الْآفَهًِْ وَ الدَّنَسِ وَ الْفَسَادِ وَ لِیَکُونَ مَسْتُوراً عَنِ الْأَوْلِیَاءِ وَ الْأَعْدَاءِ فَلَا یَشْمَتُ عَدُوٌّ وَ لَا یَحْزَنُ صَدِیق.
امام رضا (علیه السلام)- گفته شد: «چرا خلائق مأمور شده‌اند میّت را دفن کنند»؟ در جواب گفته می‌شود: «برای اینکه مردم بر فاسد شدن جسد میّت مطّلع نشده و از قبح منظر و بدبو شدن او آگاه نگردیده و همچنین زندگان از بوی متعفّن او و آفت و آلودگی و فسادی که در جسدش پیدا می‌شود، اذیّت و آزار نشوند و نیز به خاطر آنکه بدن میّت از دید دوستان و دشمنان مستور و پوشیده بماند تا در نتیجه نه دشمنان شماتت کنند و نه دوستان از رؤیت صحنه‌ی دلخراش پاشیده شدن جسد او محزون گردند».
Imam Rida (peace be upon him): It was said: "Why have people been commanded to bury the deceased?" In reply it is said: "So that people do not become aware of the decay of the deceased's body, nor of the ugliness of its appearance and its foul smell; and so that the living are not harmed by its stench and by the affliction, filth and corruption that afflicts it; and also so that the body of the deceased remains hidden and concealed from the sight of friends and enemies, so that as a result the enemies do not gloat, and the friends do not become grieved at seeing the heartbreaking scene of the disintegration of his body."
ઇમામ રિઝા (અલયહિસ્સલામ): કહેવામાં આવ્યું: "સર્જન શા માટે મય્યિતને દફન કરવાનો હુકમ આપવામાં આવ્યો છે?" જવાબમાં કહેવામાં આવે છે: "જેથી લોકો મય્યિતના શરીરના સડવાથી માહિતગાર ન થાય અને તેના ખરાબ દેખાવ અને દુર્ગંધથી પરિચિત ન થાય, અને એવી જ રીતે જીવતા લોકો તેની દુર્ગંધ અને તેના શરીરમાં પેદા થતી આફત, ગંદકી અને સડાથી પરેશાન અને દુઃખી ન થાય, અને એ માટે પણ કે મય્યિતનું શરીર દોસ્તો અને દુશ્મનોની દૃષ્ટિથી છુપાયેલું અને ઢંકાયેલું રહે જેથી પરિણામે ન દુશ્મનો ટોણો મારે અને ન દોસ્તો તેના શરીરના વિખેરાવવાના હૃદયદ્રાવક દ્રશ્યને જોઈને દુઃખી થાય."
