Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Mufaddal said: I asked my master Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): "Does the mission of the awaited Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble relief) have a fixed time that people should know when it will be?" He said: "Allah forbid that He should fix the time of his appearance in such a way that our Shia would know it... The Mahdi (peace be upon him) comes to the Zaydiyyah sect and admonishes them for three days and invites them to peace and to accept him, but they only increase in rebellion and disbelief. So the Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble relief), out of necessity, issues the order to kill them, and they are all put to the sword. Then the Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble relief) says to his companions: 'Do not take their Qurans; leave them so that they become a source of regret for them, just as they altered, changed and distorted it and did not act according to what was in it.' Mufaddal said: 'Master! What does the Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble relief) do afterwards?' He said: 'He sends an army to Damascus to arrest the Sufyani; they seize him and slaughter him on a rock. Then Husayn (peace be upon him) appears with twelve thousand truthful ones and the seventy-two men who were among his companions at Karbala and were martyred with him. Oh, how blessed is that luminous return! Then the greatest truthful one, the Commander of the Faithful Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), appears, and a tent is erected for him in Najaf, standing on four pillars: one pillar in Najaf, one pillar in Hijr Ismail (peace be upon him), one pillar at Safa, and one pillar in the land of Madinah. It is as if I see its lamps shining like the lights of the sun and moon in the sky and the earth. At that time the hidden secrets [of man] are made manifest.'"
