The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family): Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar al-Zuhri, through the chain of narrators, narrated from Salman al-Farisi (may Allah have mercy on him) who said: While all of us, except Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), were around the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), suddenly a bedouin Arab came forward... This bedouin told me about the men of Khath'am, that they have prepared their armies and the banners are fluttering above them. They belie my words and claim that they do not know my Lord. At their head is al-Harith ibn Makida al-Khath'ami with five hundred men of Khath'am, and they have sworn by al-Lat and al-Uzza that they will not return until they enter Medina and kill me and those with me. And I said to my companions: 'Which of you will go out against these people, before they trample us in our lands and sanctuary, that Allah may grant victory at his hands, and I guarantee for him from Allah twelve palaces in Paradise?' ... Then Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! I will go against them.' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'O Ali! This is for you and you are for it. Go bravely to fight this people.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) equipped him with one hundred and fifty men from the Muhajirin and Ansar... Ali (peace be upon him) set out with his companions until they descended into a valley three miles behind Medina, called Wadi Dhi Khashab... Then Ali (peace be upon him) called out again: 'Is there any challenger or opponent?' This time al-Harith ibn Makida, who was the commander of that army and was reckoned equal to five hundred warrior horsemen, hastened to face him. And he was the one about whom Allah revealed this verse: إِنَّ الْإِنْسانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَکَنُودٌ [Most surely man is ungrateful to his Lord], meaning extremely ungrateful.
