Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): On the Day of Resurrection a servant will be brought who has prayed. He will say, 'O Lord, I prayed seeking Your pleasure.' He will be told, 'No — you prayed so that it would be said, how well so-and-so prays.' Then it will be ordered: take him to the Fire. After this another servant will be brought who has learned the Quran. He will say, 'O Lord, I learned the Quran seeking Your pleasure.' It will be said, 'Yes — you learned the Quran so that they would say he has a beautiful voice.' Then the order will come: take him too to the Fire. Then another servant will be brought who has waged jihad. He will say, 'O Lord, I went to jihad for Your pleasure.' He will be told, 'No — you went to jihad so that they would say so-and-so is brave.' Here too the order will come: take him to the Fire. Then another servant will be brought who has spent his wealth in the way of Allah the Exalted. He will say, 'O Lord, I spent my wealth in Your way.' He too will be told, 'No — in your spending your aim was that people should say how generous he is.' The order will come: take him too into the Fire.
