Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him): Yahya ibn Aktham said: Musa ibn Muhammad had some questions which he put to Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him). One of them was about the verse: وَ رَفَعَ أَبَوَیْهِ عَلَی الْعَرْشِ وَ خَرُّوا لَهُ سُجَّداً [And he raised his parents upon the throne and they fell down in prostration before him]. He asked Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him): "Did Ya'qub (peace be upon him) and his sons prostrate to Yusuf (peace be upon him), even though they were prophets?" The Imam (peace be upon him) replied: "The prostration of Ya'qub (peace be upon him) and his sons was not for Yusuf (peace be upon him); rather, their prostration was as an act of worship of Allah, and [at the same time] a greeting and salutation to Yusuf (peace be upon him), just as the angels prostrated before Adam (peace be upon him) — that prostration was not for his sake, but as an act of obedience to Allah and a greeting to Adam (peace be upon him). Ya'qub (peace be upon him), his sons, and Yusuf (peace be upon him) himself all prostrated to Allah as an act of thanksgiving to Him, because Allah had gathered them together. Do you not see that Yusuf (peace be upon him), in that moment of giving thanks to Allah, said: 'My Lord! You have given me a [great] portion of the kingdom, and taught me the interpretation of dreams! O Originator of the heavens and the earth! You are my guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim, and join me to the righteous!' (Yusuf/101). At that moment, Jibra'il descended upon Yusuf (peace be upon him) and said to him: 'O Yusuf (peace be upon him)! Bring out your hand.' When Yusuf (peace be upon him) brought out his hand, a light came forth from between his fingers. Yusuf (peace be upon him) said: 'O Jibra'il! What was this light?' Jibra'il (peace be upon him) said: 'This is (the light of) prophethood, which Allah has taken out from your progeny, because you did not rise in respect for your father.' Thus, Allah removed His light and erased prophethood from the progeny of Yusuf (peace be upon him), and placed it in the progeny of Lawi, the brother of Yusuf (peace be upon him). That was because when the brothers intended to kill Yusuf (peace be upon him), Lawi said: 'Do not kill Yusuf! And if you want to do something, cast him into the depths of the well.' (Yusuf/10). For that, Allah honored his action; and when Bunyamin was detained in Egypt by Yusuf's (peace be upon him) order, and the brothers intended to return to Ya'qub (peace be upon him), Lawi said: 'I will not leave this land until my father gives me permission or Allah judges concerning me, and He is the best of judges!' (Yusuf/80). For that too Allah honored his action. As a result, all the prophets of Bani Isra'il were from the descendants of Lawi son of Ya'qub ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and Musa (peace be upon him) too was from his descendants — being Musa ibn Imran ibn Yahsir ibn Wahith {Wahib} ibn Lawi ibn Ya'qub ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim (peace be upon him)."
