The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family)- Asbagh ibn Nubata said: Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) said to me: Take me to the graveyard, for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) has said: "O Salman! When your death draws near, indeed a dead person will speak with you." So when I took him there and he called out to the dead, one of them answered him. Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) asked him about death and what comes after it, and he answered with long stories and great terrors that had come upon him, until he said: "When my family bid me farewell and wanted to leave my grave, regret overtook me and I said: 'Would that I could return!' And someone from a corner of the grave answered me: 'Not so! That is a word he speaks [and if he were to return, his deeds would be as they were before]! And behind them is a barzakh (barrier) until the day they are resurrected!' (al-Mu'minun/100). I said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am Munabbih. I am an angel whom Allah the Mighty and Majestic has appointed over all His creation to inform them, after their death, of their deeds, so that they may record their own deeds before Allah the Mighty and Majestic.' Then he pulled me and sat me up and said: 'Write your deeds.' I said: 'I cannot count them.' He said: 'Have you not heard the word of your Lord, who has said: أَحْصاهُ اللَّهُ وَ نَسُوهُ [Allah has kept account of it while they have forgotten it] (al-Mujadila/6)?' Then he said: 'I will dictate to you and you write.' I said: 'Where is the paper?' He pulled a corner of my shroud and it became paper, and he said: 'This is your page.' I said: 'From where shall I bring a pen?' He said: 'Your index finger.' I said: 'The ink?' He said: 'Your saliva.' Then he dictated to me everything I had done in the world, and he left out nothing, small or great, as Allah says: يا وَيْلَتَنا ما لِهذَا الْكِتابِ لا يُغادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَ لا كَبِيرَةً إِلَّا أَحْصاها وَ وَجَدُوا ما عَمِلُوا حاضِراً وَ لا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَداً [They say: 'Woe to us! What kind of book is this that leaves out no small or great deed but has counted it?' And [this while] they find all their deeds present, and your Lord does not wrong anyone.] (al-Kahf/49). Then he took the writing and sealed it with a seal and hung it around my neck, and it seemed to me as though all the mountains of the world had been made a collar around my neck. I said to him: 'O Munabbih! Why do you do this to me?' He said: 'Have you not heard the word of your Lord, who says: وَ كُلَّ إِنسانٍ أَلْزَمْناهُ طائِرَهُ فِي عُنُقِهِ وَ نُخْرِجُ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيامَةِ كِتاباً يَلْقاهُ مَنْشُوراً، اقْرَأْ كِتابَكَ كَفى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيباً [And every man's actions We have fastened to his neck, and We will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a book which he will find wide open. Read your book! Sufficient is your own self this day as a reckoner against you.] This is what will be addressed to you on the Day of Resurrection, and you will be brought forth with your book open before your eyes, bearing witness against yourself.' Then he departed from before me."
