Imam Askari (peace be upon him): Imam Askari (peace be upon him) narrates that I said to my father Imam Hadi (peace be upon him): "When the Jews and opponents used to object to and oppose the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), did the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) also debate with them?" He said: "Yes, many times..." ... One day the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) was sitting with his companions beside the House of the Kaaba, reciting to them the verses of the Quran and the commands of the Lord. At that moment a group of the chiefs of the Quraysh — among them al-Walid ibn al-Mughira al-Makhzumi, Abu al-Bakhtari ibn Hisham, Abu Jahl, al-As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi, Abd Allah ibn Abi Umayya al-Makhzumi, and a group of their followers — gathered and began to converse with one another... First Abd Allah ibn Abi Umayya al-Makhzumi began to speak and said: "O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)! You have made a great claim and are saying something formidable. You consider yourself the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), although it is not fitting that Allah, the Creator of the world, should make someone like you His envoy and messenger — a human being who eats and drinks as we do and walks in the streets and markets. Take a look at the rulers of Rome and the kings of Persia: if they wish to send an envoy, they certainly choose a person who has status and possesses wealth — lofty palaces, beautiful gardens, and many male and female servants. Allah is greater and more powerful than all these rulers, and all of them are His servants. Beyond that, if you were a Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), He would have sent an angel with you to confirm you, and we would see him. Indeed, if Allah had decided to send us a prophet, He would certainly have sent an angel, not a man like ourselves. You are a man who is bewitched and has lost his mind, not a prophet and envoy of Allah." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Do you have anything else to say?" He said: "O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)! Was what I raised against you not enough? Nothing more remains. Now, whatever answer you have, express it clearly and plainly. If you can really do so, fulfil our requests and produce your argument for us, if you have any evidence." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "O Allah! You hear every sound and are aware of every thing. You have heard the words of these servants of Yours." Allah revealed this verse to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): "And they said: 'Why does this Messenger eat food and walk in the markets?!' ... 'You are only following a man who is bewitched'!" (Furqan/8, 7). Then He says: انْظُرْ کَیْفَ ضَرَبُوا لَکَ الْأَمْثالَ فَضَلُّوا فَلا یَسْتَطِیعُونَ سَبِیلًا [See how they coin similitudes for you, so they have gone astray and cannot find a way]. As for your saying, "You are a bewitched man" — how can this statement about me be correct, while you yourselves acknowledge that I was and am in complete soundness of body and mind, and in all these forty years of my life that have passed, you have not seen the slightest error, slip, crooked thought, betrayal, or lie in my words? Do you suppose that anyone, over the course of these forty years, has been able by the power of his own will and strength to preserve and safeguard himself in the utmost uprightness and trustworthiness — or has this only been through the support, attention and grace of the Lord of the worlds? And this is the very statement of Allah, who has said: "See how they coin similitudes for you — how they have described you — so they have gone astray and cannot find a way." (Furqan/9) — to the point that, in order to prove their false claim which is in no way hidden from you, they have no proof or argument.
