The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): Abu Umar and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: "We were seated in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) when Salman al-Farisi (may Allah have mercy on him), Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah have mercy on him), al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, Ammar ibn Yasir, Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, Abu al-Haytham ibn al-Tayyihan, Khuzayma ibn Thabit Dhu al-Shahadatayn, and Abu al-Tufayl Amir ibn Wathila came and knelt before the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and grief was apparent on their faces. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)! May our fathers and mothers be sacrificed for you. We hear from a group things about your brother and cousin that grieve us, and we now seek your permission to answer them.' The Prophet said: 'What are they saying about my brother and cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him)?' They said: 'They say: what virtue is there for Ali in his precedence to Islam, when at the time of the appearance of Islam he was a young child? And words of this sort.' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) asked: 'Is this what grieves you?' They said: 'Yes, by Allah.' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'I ask you by Allah ... did not Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, say concerning Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him): فَناداها مِنْ تَحْتِها أَلَّا تَحْزَنِی قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّکِ تَحْتَکِ سَرِیًّا [Then he called out to her from beneath her: Do not grieve; your Lord has made a stream to flow beneath you] ... Did not Isa (peace be upon him) speak at the time of his birth and when his mother pointed to him, and does the Quran not say concerning this: قالُوا کَیْفَ نُکَلِّمُ مَنْ کانَ فِی الْمَهْدِ صَبِیًّا إِنِّی عَبْدُ اللهِ آتانِیَ الْکِتابَ [They said: How shall we speak to one who is a child in the cradle? (He said:) Indeed I am the servant of Allah; He has given me the Book]? So you see that Isa (peace be upon him) spoke at the time of his birth, and at that very age the heavenly Book and special prophethood were granted to him, and when three days of his life had passed he was enjoined to establish prayer and pay zakat. And on the second day of his birth he spoke with the people.'"
