Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): [Those hypocrites] said: We alone are reformers; for we do not believe in the religion of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), nor in any other religion, and we are among the confused ones in religion. We have consented to outwardly accept the religion and law of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), but inwardly we fulfill the desires of our own selves. In this way we benefit from [accepting] the religion of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) [and take advantage of it] and abandon him [to his own fate]; we free ourselves from bondage to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and refuse obedience to his cousin Ali (peace be upon him). So [in this way], if the religion of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) prevails [and endures] in the world, we will have been among its followers; and if his rule perishes, we will have been safe from the reproach of his enemies. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدونَ [Now surely they themselves are the mischief-makers], for they act according to their own desires. And Allah the Exalted informs His Prophet of their hypocrisy, and he himself curses them, and he also commands the believers to curse them. The believers do not trust them either, and say to themselves: just as these people show hypocrisy among the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), they show duplicity toward us as well; so they have no standing with them, nor are they trusted by these either.
