Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): The parable of what this Quran addresses to the hypocrites is the very Quran that was revealed to you, O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), making known the oneness of Allah the Exalted, and manifesting the proofs of your prophethood, and also establishing the worthiness of your brother Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) for the station in which you placed him, the position you set him in, the rank to which you raised him, and the authority you entrusted him with, [these matters are] in the verse كَصَيِّبٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَاتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ [Or like a downpour from the sky in which is darkness, thunder and lightning]. The Exalted said: O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)! Just as this torrential rain contains things that terrify whoever is afflicted by it, so too are they, because of their refusal to pledge allegiance to Ali (peace be upon him) and their fear that you, O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), would discover their hypocrisy, like one caught in this rain, thunder and lightning, fearing that the thunder would tear out his heart, or the lightning would strike him with a thunderbolt. Likewise, they fear that you would discover their disbelief, and that would necessitate their killing and uprooting.
