Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): A man asked my father after his return from the mawqif (station of Arafat): 'In your view, does Allah deprive all these servants [of forgiveness] and leave them despairing?' My father said: 'No believer or disbeliever stops at this mawqif except that Allah forgives him; but their forgiveness is of three kinds: [Sometimes] Allah forgives the past and future sins of the believer and delivers him from the Fire, and this is the statement of Allah the Mighty and Majestic: "And there are some who say: Our Lord! grant us [good] in this world and [good] in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the Fire. They shall have (their) portion of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning." (Baqara/201–202). And sometimes, in the case of some of them, Allah forgives only their past sins and it is said to them: "Do good in what remains of your life," and this is the statement of the Lord: فَمَنْ تَعَجَّلَ فِی یَوْمَیْنِ فَلا إِثْمَ عَلَیْهِ وَ مَنْ تَأَخَّرَ فَلا إِثْمَ عَلَیْهِ [Whoever hastens off in two days, there is no blame on him, and whoever remains behind, there is no blame on him] — meaning: whoever dies before he departs [from Arafat], there is no sin upon him [and his sins have been wiped away], but if he [remains alive and] departs [from Arafat] earlier than the appointed time, provided he does not commit major sins, there is no sin upon him.'
