Ibn Abbas (may Allah have mercy on him): The verse was revealed concerning a man named Suhayb ibn Sinan, the freedman of Abdullah ibn Jud'an. The polytheists took him captive along with a group of Muslims which included: Khayr, the freedman of Bani al-Hadrami of Quraysh; Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, the freedman of Thabit ibn Umm Anmar; Bilal, the freedman of Abu Bakr; Ayish [Ayis], the freedman of Huwaytib ibn Abd al-Uzza; and Ammar together with his father Yasir and his mother Sumayya. Ammar's father and mother were killed, and those two were the first martyrs among the Muslims, and the rest were tortured. After the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) had migrated from Makkah to Madinah, the disbelievers demanded of those Muslims that they turn back to the way of the disbelievers. Suhayb, who was an aged old man possessing goods and wealth, said to them: "Shall I bring you a benefit?" They said: "What do you mean?" He said: "I am an aged, weak old man, and whether I am on your side or on the side of your enemies does me no harm to you. I have spoken a word from which it would displease me to step down. Is it not to your advantage that you take my property and leave me and my religion?" They did so [and released him in exchange for the money], and this verse was revealed. When Suhayb entered Madinah, Abu Bakr saw him and said to him: "O Suhayb! Know that your transaction has profited," or he said: "Know that in your transaction you have not lost." And he recited this verse to him, and he rejoiced. As for Bilal, Khabbab, Ayish [Ayis], Ammar and their companions, they were tortured until they said some of what the polytheists wanted, and were released. And this verse was revealed concerning them: "Those who migrated for the sake of Allah after being wronged — We shall surely settle them in a good place in this world, and the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they knew."
