از تو، درباره‌ي جنگ‌کردن در ماه حرام، سؤال مى‌کنند؛ بگو: «جنگ در آن، [گناهى] بزرگ است؛ ولى جلوگیرى از راه خدا [و گرایش مردم به آیین حق] و کفرورزیدن نسبت به او و [هتک احترام] مسجدالحرام، و اخراج ساکنان آن، نزد خداوند مهم‌تر از آن است؛ و ایجاد فتنه، [و محیط نامساعد، که مردم را به کفر، تشویق و از ایمان باز مى‌دارد] حتّى از قتل مهم‌تر است. و مشرکان، پیوسته با شما مى‌جنگند، تا اگر بتوانند شما را از آیینتان برگردانند؛ ولى هرکس از شما که از آیینش برگردد، و در حال کفر بمیرد، تمام اعمال [نیک گذشته] او، در دنیا و آخرت، بر باد مى‌رود؛ و چنین کسانى اهل دوزخند؛ و جاودانه در آن خواهند بود.
They ask you concerning the sacred month about fighting in it. Say: Fighting in it is a grave matter, and hindering (men) from Allah's way and denying Him, and (hindering men from) the Sacred Mosque and turning its people out of it, are still graver with Allah, and persecution is graver than slaughter; and they will not cease fighting with you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can; and whoever of you turns back from his religion, then he dies while an unbeliever-- these it is whose works shall go for nothing in this world and the hereafter, and they are the inmates of the fire; therein they shall abide.
(લોકો) તને મોહતરમ મહિનાઓમાં જેહાદ કરવા સબંધી પૂછે છે; કહે કે તેમાં જેહાદ કરવી (એ ગુનાહે) કબીરા છે; તેમજ (લોકોને) અલ્લાહની રાહથી રોકવા તથા (પોતે પણ) અલ્લાહનો ઈન્કાર કરવો અને મસ્જિદુલ હરામથી લોકોને અટકાવવા અને તેમાંથી તેના રહેવાસીઓને કાઢી મૂકવા (તે) અલ્લાહની નઝદીક (હુરમતવાળા મહિનામાં લડાઇ કરવાથી પણ વધારે) ગંભીર (ગુનોહ) છે અને ફિત્નો કત્લ કરતાંય વધારે ગંભીર (ગુનાહ) છે. અને તે (મુશ્રીકો) તમારાથી સતત લડ્યા કરશે એટલે સુધી કે જો તેમનું ચાલે તો તેઓ તમને તમારા દીનથી ફેરવી નાખે; અને જો તમારામાંથી કોઇ પોતાના દીનથી ફરી જાય તો તે કાફિરની મૌત મરશે અને તેવા લોકોના (નેક) આમાલ દુનિયા અને આખેરતમાં બરબાદ થઈ જશે, અને તેઓ જહન્નમીઓ છે, જેમાં તેઓ હંમેશા રહેશે.
