The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): Both of them ate from that tree. So from that very day, Allah brought them both down to the earth... Allah said: 'O Adam (peace be upon him)! You and your wife go down to the earth. So if you set your affairs right, I will set you right; if you work for Me, I will give you strength and power; and if your aim is to seek My pleasure, I will hasten to be pleased with you; and if you fear Me, I will make you safe from My punishment.' Then they both wept and said: 'Our Lord! Help us to reform ourselves and to do that which is pleasing to You.' Allah said to them: 'If you commit an evil deed, then turn to Me in repentance after it, and I will turn to you [in mercy], for I am Allah, the Oft-Returning, the Merciful.' Adam (peace be upon him) said: 'Then send us down to the land that is most beloved to You.' Allah revealed to Jibra'il (peace be upon him): Take them down to the blessed land of Makkah. Jibra'il (peace be upon him) brought them down and placed Adam (peace be upon him) upon Safa and Hawwa (peace be upon her) upon Marwa. He said: After they were placed there, they both stood on their feet and raised their heads toward the sky and with loud voices, humbly cried and wailed at the threshold of Allah. Allah said to them: 'What has made you weep after I was pleased with you?' They both replied: 'Those errors which caused us to be expelled from the nearness of our Lord have made us weep, while [the nearness of the angels and the sight of] the sanctification of Your angels has been concealed and hidden from us, and our private parts have become exposed, and our sin has made us in need of the provisions of the world, its foods and its drinks, and because of separation from You, a severe fear has come upon us.' At that moment, Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful, had mercy on them and revealed to Jibra'il (peace be upon him): I am Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful, and I have mercy on Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa (peace be upon her) because of the complaint they made to Me. So go down to them with one of the tents of Paradise, and console them on My behalf for the separation from Paradise which has grieved them, and gather them both in the tent. For indeed I have had mercy on them because of their weeping, their fear, and their loneliness. And set up the tent in the valley that lies between the mountains of Makkah. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: That valley was the site of the House of the Ka'bah, and before the descent, the angels had raised its foundations. So Jibra'il (peace be upon him) came down to Adam (peace be upon him) with that tent, which was the size of the pillars and columns of the Ka'bah, and set it up. Jibra'il (peace be upon him) brought Adam (peace be upon him) down from Safa and Hawwa (peace be upon her) down from Marwa and gathered them both in the tent, while the pole of the tent was a branch of red ruby, and its light and brightness illuminated the mountains of Makkah and its surroundings. The pillars of light spread out and Allah made it [the boundary of] the Haram, in such a way that all those places which the light of the pole reached became the places of the Haram and its boundaries. So Allah made it the Haram out of respect for that tent and its pole, because they were both from Paradise. The Imam (peace be upon him) said: For this reason, Allah [counts] good deeds and evil deeds in the Haram as doubled. Eventually the ropes of the tent were spread around it and its pegs extended to the surroundings of the Masjid al-Haram, while its pegs were from the branches of the trees of Paradise, and its ropes were from the small twigs of the arghawan (Judas) tree. Allah revealed to Jibra'il (peace be upon him) to send down seventy thousand angels to guard the tent from the harm of the rebellious jinn, to keep company with Adam and Hawwa (peace be upon them), and to circumambulate the tent in reverence for the House of the Ka'bah and the tent. So the angels came down beside the tent and protected it from the intrusion of the devils and the rebellious ones, and each day and each night they went around the Ka'bah and the tent just as they used to circumambulate the Bayt al-Ma'mur in the sky. The Imam (peace be upon him) said: The foundations of Bayt Allah al-Haram on earth are directly opposite the Bayt al-Ma'mur in the sky. After that, Allah revealed to Jibra'il (peace be upon him): Go down to Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa (peace be upon her) and move them away from the place that is the foundation of My House. For indeed I wish to descend in a shade of angels to the earth and raise the foundations of My House for My angels and for My creation from among the children of Adam (peace be upon him). Jibra'il (peace be upon him) came down to Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa (peace be upon her) and brought them out of the tent, and moved them and the tent away from the valley of Bayt Allah al-Haram. Jibra'il (peace be upon him) transferred Adam (peace be upon him) to Safa, Hawwa (peace be upon her) to Marwa, and the tent to the sky. Then Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa (peace be upon her) said: 'O Jibra'il (peace be upon him), have you moved us and separated us on account of Allah's anger, or has Allah decreed it for us with His good pleasure?' Jibra'il (peace be upon him) said to them: 'That separation was not out of the Lord's anger toward you, but Allah is not questioned about what He does. O Adam (peace be upon him)! The seventy thousand angels whom Allah sent down to earth to keep company with you and to circumambulate around the pillars of the Ka'bah and the tent asked Allah to build for them, in place of the tent, a house in that blessed valley opposite the Bayt al-Ma'mur, so that they might circumambulate around this House just as they used to circumambulate around the Bayt al-Ma'mur in the sky. So Allah revealed to me to remove you and Hawwa (peace be upon her) and take the tent up to the sky.' Then Adam (peace be upon him) said: 'We are content with Allah's decree and the execution of His command concerning us.' So Adam (peace be upon him) was on Safa and Hawwa (peace be upon her) on Marwa. After some time had passed, Adam (peace be upon him), from being far from Hawwa (peace be upon her), was afflicted with intense fear and sorrow, and he came down from the mountain of Safa and set out toward Marwa to see Hawwa (peace be upon her). Although between Safa and Marwa there was a valley, and Adam could see Marwa from the top of Safa, when he reached the middle of the valley, Marwa disappeared from him. Then, fearing that perhaps he had lost the way and could not find Marwa, he ran in that valley. When he crossed the valley and rose up on the other side, he looked at Marwa, so he walked until he reached Marwa, climbed the mountain, and greeted Hawwa (peace be upon her). Then they both turned toward the valley in which Bayt Allah al-Haram was and looked to see whether the pillars of the Ka'bah were being raised, and they asked Allah to return them both to their original place, until Adam (peace be upon him) came down from Marwa and returned to Safa and stood upon it, and turned his face toward that hill (the site of Bayt Allah al-Haram) and called upon Allah. Then he longed to see Hawwa (peace be upon her); so he came down from Safa heading for Marwa and did as he had done the first time. Then he returned to Safa and did what he had done the first time. Then he came down from Safa heading for Marwa and did as in the two previous times. Then he returned to Safa, stood upon it and asked Allah to gather him and his wife Hawwa (peace be upon her) in one place. The Imam (peace be upon him) said: Adam (peace be upon him) went three times from Safa to Marwa and returned three times. So this going and coming became six laps. When the two of them called upon Allah — and that was at the time of the sun's decline on that day — wept before Him, and asked Him to place them side by side, Allah granted their request. Then Jibra'il (peace be upon him) came to him while Adam (peace be upon him) was standing on top of Safa, facing the place of the Ka'bah, calling upon Allah, and said: 'O Adam (peace be upon him)! Come down from Safa and join Hawwa (peace be upon her).' So Adam (peace be upon him) came down from Safa heading for Marwa and acted as he had in the three previous times, until he reached Marwa, climbed up it, and informed Hawwa (peace be upon her) of what Jibra'il (peace be upon him) had told him. Then they were greatly delighted at that, and praised Allah and thanked Him. After that, the sa'y (running) between Safa and Marwa became a sunnah, and for this reason Allah said: * إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَیْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْهِ أَن یَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا [Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the signs of Allah! So whoever performs Hajj to the House of Allah or Umrah, there is no blame upon him to circumambulate between the two.] (Al-Baqara/158). Then Jibra'il (peace be upon him) went to Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa (peace be upon her) and brought them both down from Marwa and informed them that Allah, the Compeller, the Exalted, had descended to the earth and had raised the pillars of Bayt al-Haram with a stone from Safa, a stone from Marwa, a stone from Mount Sinai, and a stone from Jabal al-Salam, which is behind Kufa, and He revealed to Jibra'il (peace be upon him) to build it and complete it. So Jibra'il (peace be upon him), by Allah's command, uprooted these four stones from their places with his wings, and placed them where Allah had commanded, upon the pillars, upon the foundations of the Ka'bah which Allah, the Compeller, had designated, and set up its columns. Then He revealed to Jibra'il (peace be upon him): 'Build it and complete it with stones from Abu Qubays, and make for it two doors, an eastern door and a western door.' So when Jibra'il (peace be upon him) had completed it, the angels circumambulated around it, and Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa (peace be upon her), upon seeing the angels going around the Ka'bah, set out and circumambulated around the Ka'bah seven times. Then they went out from there in search of food, and this was on the day that Allah had brought them down.
