Imam Ali (peace be upon him): Allah has described the story of those who altered [the scripture] in several statements. [Woe, then, to those who write the book with their hands and then say: This is from Allah, so that they may take for it a small price], and in this divine statement: "And indeed, a group of them recite their own speech in the tune of the speech of Allah [so that no one may perceive their alteration]," and also this statement: "By night they devise speech that Allah is not pleased with" — after the loss of the Messenger of Allah they set about altering things whose falsehood they favoured, like what the Jews and Christians did: after the loss of Musa (peace be upon him) and Isa (peace be upon him), they changed the books of the Torah and the Injil and took to altering the divine speech.
