Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Jabir narrated from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) concerning the verse: "And whoever performs a good deed, We increase him therein in goodness" (Shura/23), that he said: "Whoever loves the successors (awsiya) of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and follows them, the love and wilayah of the previous prophets and believers, back to Adam (peace be upon him), becomes his share, and it is added to the wilayah of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) which he already has. This is the interpretation of the verse: 'Those who perform a good deed shall have a reward better than it' (Naml/89), which causes entry into Paradise, and this verse alludes to the same: Say: 'Whatever reward I have asked from you is for yourselves' (Saba/47) — through it you are guided and are saved from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection. But to those who are enemies of Allah and followers of Satan and who deny and reject, He says: [O Prophet]! Say: 'I ask no reward from you for the call of prophethood, and I am not of the pretenders (mutakallifin) [my words are clear and accompanied by proof]!' (Sad/86). A group of the hypocrites said to one another: Was it not enough for Muhammad that he rode on our shoulders for twenty years that now he intends to impose his relatives upon us? Allah has not given him such a command; he is fabricating it himself, he wants to give his kinsfolk precedence over us. If he is killed or dies, we will take this rulership away from his household. We will not let them rule over us any longer. Allah wished to inform His Prophet of what they had said and what they intended, so in this verse He said: Do they say: 'He has invented a lie against Allah'?! Yet if Allah wished, He would set a seal upon your heart [and if you were to say anything contrary, He would take from you the power to declare these verses] (Shura/24). He says: 'If I willed, I would cut off revelation from you so that you would not speak about the virtues of your household nor call people to their love, and He blots out falsehood and establishes the truth by His words' (Shura/24). But Allah declares the reality — that wilayah belongs exclusively to your Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). Allah is Knowing of what is within the breasts (Anfal/43). He knows all things and those grudges which they have hidden in their hearts against the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family). This verse alludes to the same: وَ أَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَی الَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا هَلْ هذا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُکُمْ أَ فَتَأْتُونَ السِّحْرَ وَ أَنْتُمْ تُبْصِرُونَ [And those who are unjust counsel together in secret: 'Is this anything but a mortal like yourselves; will you then yield to enchantment while you see?']."
