Imam Ali (peace be upon him): From Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) [it is narrated that Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) said]: In one of the years of the imamate of Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him), the Eid of Ghadir fell on a Friday, and that day he sat on the pulpit five hours into the day. He gave praise and glorification such that no one had heard the like of that praise, nor had anyone offered the like of that glorification. Among the statements preserved from that sermon are these words: … Today is a great day on which relief has come, ranks have been raised, and proofs have been made clear. It is the day of manifestation and clear declaration of the explicit position, the day of the perfection of religion, the day of the promised covenant, and the day of the witness and the witnessed. It is the day of binding the pact against hypocrisy and denial, the day of declaring the realities of faith, the day of driving away Satan, and the day of proof. Today is the day of judgement which you [used to deny]. Today is the day of the Exalted Assembly (al-Mala al-A'la) from which you are turning aside. Today is the day of guidance, the day of the testing of the servants, and the day of confirming the forerunners. Today is the day of disclosing the secrets hidden in the breasts and the concealed things of affairs. Today is the day of the manifestation of truth to the elect. Today is the day of Shith, Idris, Yusha' and Sham'un (peace be upon them). Today is the day of security and the trusted one. It is the day of expressing the secrets preserved within, and the day of the disclosure of hidden mysteries. He (peace be upon him) kept saying: today is the day of such and such. So fear Allah and adopt taqwa (piety) toward Him, respond to Him and obey Him, beware of deceit and do not intend to deceive Him, disclose your hidden secrets and do not act deceitfully with Him, and draw near to Allah through His oneness and through obedience to the one whom Allah has commanded.
