Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): It is narrated from Jabir ibn Yazid al-Ju'fi that Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: When Allah wishes to take the soul of an unbeliever, He says: "O Angel of Death, go with your helpers to My enemy, for I invited him to Dar al-Salam but he turned away and reviled Me, and he disbelieved in Me and in My blessings and reproached Me upon My Throne. Take his soul and cast him into the Fire." So the Angel of Death comes to him with an ugly, dark face; his eyes have a terrifying flash and his voice is like crashing thunder... So when he looks at the Angel of Death, his gaze becomes fixed and his intellect leaves him. He says: "O Angel of Death, return me." The Angel of Death says: Never! This is [only] a word he utters. (Al-Mu'minun/100) He says: "O Angel of Death, then to whom shall I entrust my wealth and children and family and clan and my belongings in the world?" He says: "Leave them for someone other than yourself, and go to Hell." He strikes him with an iron rod, a blow that penetrates every vein and sinew of his body; then he drags him so that his soul comes up from the soles of his feet, and when it reaches his knees, he orders his helpers, who beat him with whips and throw him down and lift him up again, and before his soul comes out they make him taste the agonies of death. It is as if he has been struck with a thousand swords, and were he to have the strength of jinn and mankind, every vein of his body would open its lips to complain before him from the severity of the pain of a many-branched iron rod placed on wet wool, which uproots whatever it touches. Such is the exit of the unbeliever's soul from the veins, limbs, joints and hairs. So when the soul reaches the throat, the angels strike his face and his back and say to him: أَخْرِجُوا أَنْفُسَکُمُ الْیَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ عَذابَ الْهُونِ بِما کُنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَی اللهِ غَیْرَ الْحَقِّ وَ کُنْتُمْ عَنْ آیاتِهِ تَسْتَکْبِرُونَ [Give up your souls; this day you shall be recompensed with the punishment of humiliation because you spoke against Allah other than the truth and you rejected His signs out of arrogance]. Then they push him and his fall lasts seventy thousand years until he strikes the hammers. When he strikes them, they pound upon him and upon his devil, and the devil binds him with a chain. Every time he raises his head and looks at the ugliness of his devil's face, his face becomes black and he says: "یا لَیْتَ بَیْنِی وَ بَیْنَکَ بُعْدَ الْمَشْرِقَیْنِ فَبِئْسَ الْقَرِینُ [O would that between me and you there were the distance of the East and the West; so evil is the associate!]; woe to you, for you led me astray — take away some of Allah's punishment from me." He says: "O wretched one! How shall I remove any punishment from you when you and I on this day share in the punishment together?" Then he strikes him a blow on his head, with which he falls for seventy thousand years until he reaches a spring called Aniyah.
