Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): A believer is the brother of a believer from father and mother, because Allah the Mighty and Majestic created the believers from the clay of Paradise and breathed into their bodies from the breeze of Paradise; for this reason the believers are brothers of one another from a single father and mother.

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Jabir al-Ju'fi said: I was before Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) when I became sad. I said to His Eminence (peace be upon him): "Sometimes, without any calamity befalling me or any distress or grief coming upon me, I become sorrowful, to the extent that my family and my friend notice its effect on my face." He said: "Yes, O Jabir! Allah the Mighty and Majestic created the believers from the clay of Paradise and caused the breeze of His Spirit to flow within them. For this reason, a believer is the full brother of a believer (since the clay stands in the place of the father and the breeze in the place of the mother). So whenever grief reaches one of those souls in a city, the other soul also becomes grieved, because it is of the same kind as it."

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): The believers are brothers of one another, sons of one father and one mother; and if a vein in one of them is injured, the others remain awake through his pain.

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): O people! Indeed the believers are brothers of one another. And a believer shall not consider his brother's wealth lawful except by his willing consent.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): A believer is the brother of a believer; he is his eye and his guide. He does not betray him, nor wrong him, nor deceive him, nor make him a promise that he then breaks.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he is his eye, his mirror and his guide. He does not betray him, nor deceive him, nor wrong him, nor call him a liar, nor backbite him.

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not oppress him and does not abandon him (to misfortunes). Whoever seeks to fulfil the need of his brother, Allah will fulfil his need. And whoever removes a sorrow from a Muslim, Allah will in return remove from him a sorrow among the sorrows of the Day of Judgement. And whoever covers a Muslim, Allah will cover him on the Day of Judgement.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): A believer is the brother of a believer; they are like one body, that if any part of it suffers pain, it manifests in the entire body; and their souls are one; and indeed the soul of the believer is more firmly connected to Allah than the connection of the sun's ray to it.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Hafs ibn al-Bakhtari said: I was with Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) and a man entered upon that noble one, and he said to me: "Do you love him?" I said: "Yes!" He said to me: "Why should you not love him, when he is your brother and shares your religion and is your helper against your enemy, and his sustenance is upon someone other than you."

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Jamil said: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: "The believers are servants of one another." I said: "How are they servants of one another?" He said: "They are of benefit to one another."

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): Fudayl ibn Yasar said: I heard Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) say: A group of Muslims went out of the town on a journey, but they lost the way and became severely thirsty, and they put on their shrouds and clung to the roots of the trees. A white-clad jinn came to them and said: "Rise, there is no harm upon you, here is water." And they rose and drank water until they were quenched, and they said to him: "May Allah's mercy be upon you, who are you?" He said: "I am a jinn, of those who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family); I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) say: 'A believer is the brother of a believer, his eye and his guide, and you should not perish in my presence.'"

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): It is narrated from Muawiya ibn Ammar: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'May I be your ransom! What is the meaning of this hadith which I heard from you?' He said: 'Which hadith?' I said: 'That the believer sees by the light of Allah.' He said: 'O Muawiya, indeed Allah created the believer from His light and dyed him in His mercy and took from them the covenant of our wilayah (guardianship) upon the recognition of Him on the day He made Himself known to them. So the believer is the full brother of the believer, from his father and his mother; his father is light and his mother is mercy, and indeed he sees by that very light from which he was created.'

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): Walk one mile and visit the sick; walk two miles and follow a funeral procession; walk three miles and answer an invitation; walk four miles and visit a religious brother for the sake of Allah; walk five miles and respond to one in distress; walk six miles and help the oppressed; and hold fast to seeking forgiveness. Allah — mighty is the Speaker — said: فَأَصْلِحُوا بَیْنَ أَخَوَیْکُم [So make peace between your two brothers].

Ibn Abbas (may Allah have mercy on him): When the verse إِنَّمَا المُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوةٌ [The believers are but brethren] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) established a pact of brotherhood among the Muslims, and in turn declared Abu Bakr and Umar, Uthman and Abd al-Rahman, and so on, to be religious brothers of one another. In this matter he took into consideration the rank and standing of the companions. Then, addressing Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), he said: 'You and I are also brothers of one another.'

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): O Fatima (peace be upon her)! Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) has eight excellences which shatter the bodies of the hypocrites and his enemies, and Allah has not granted these virtues to those who came before nor will He grant them to those who come after. Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) is my brother in this world and the hereafter, and others have no share in this.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): The charity that Allah loves is reconciliation between people when discord has broken out among them, and bringing them close to one another when they have grown distant from each other.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): I love making peace between two people more than giving two dinars in charity.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Narrated from Mufaddal, who said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "Whenever you see a dispute between two of our Shia, spend from my wealth to resolve it."

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Abu Hanifa Sabiq al-Hajj said: Mufaddal was passing by us; my son-in-law and I were quarrelling over an inheritance. He stood for a while and then said: "Come to the house!" We went to him, and he reconciled us with four hundred dirhams, paying that money to us from his own pocket. When he was certain that our dispute had ended, he said to us: "Know that this money is not from my own wealth. Rather, Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) has instructed me that whenever two Shia are in dispute over something, I should reconcile them and pay compensation from his wealth. And this is from that Imam's wealth."

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): One who makes peace between others [if he is compelled, for this purpose, to say something contrary to fact] is not counted as a liar.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Narrated from Muawiya ibn Wahb or Muawiya ibn Ammar: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to me: "Convey from me such and such" — regarding several matters he instructed. I said: "Shall I convey these things from you, and shall I also say on my own behalf what you have told me and other than that [in support of it]?" He said: "Yes, for the one who reconciles is not a liar in what he says — indeed it is for the sake of peace and reconciliation, and it is not a lie."
