The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): In the book I'lam al-Wara it is reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) returned from Badr, he did not stay in Medina... When the Seal of the Prophets (peace be upon him and his family) returned from the Battle of Sawiq, he stayed in Medina for the rest of the month of Dhul-Hijja and Muharram. At that time news reached him that a group from Ghatafan had gathered and intended to stir up disturbance and unrest on the outskirts of Medina, and their leader was a man named Du'thur ibn al-Harith ibn Muharib. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), together with four hundred and fifty men, and having with them a number of horses, set out to confront this group. When these Arabs learned of the movement of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), they fled to the heights of the mountains. The Prophet, together with his companions, alighted at a place called Dhu Amr and made it their encampment. While the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) was staying there with his companions, heavy rain fell, and his eminence went off for some need, and his clothes had become wet on account of the falling rain. Then his eminence took off his clothes and wrung them so that their water poured out, and then he threw them over a tree so that they might dry, and he himself rested beneath the tree. At that moment the Arabs were watching this event from a distance, and they said to their chief "Du'thur", who was very brave and daring: "This is Muhammad, who has now been separated from his companions and is sitting here at ease. Now you can kill him, and if he wishes to call his companions for help, before they arrive you will have killed him." This man at once took up a sharp, blood-shedding sword and came towards the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and suddenly stood over his eminence's head with drawn sword and said: "O Muhammad! Who is able today to prevent me from killing you?" His eminence said: "Allah!" At that moment Jibra'il struck a blow on his chest and the sword slipped from his hand. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) at once picked up the sword and said: "Who is able to prevent me from killing you?!" He said: "No one has the power to save me from your hand." At this point Du'thur ibn al-Harith uttered the two testimonies of faith on his tongue, and said: "By Allah, after this I shall never gather people against you." After this incident the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) returned his sword to him and moved away from that place. When he had parted from his eminence, he turned his face back and said: "By Allah, you are better than I." His eminence said: "Yes, the matter is just so and must be so." When he returned to his companions, they said to him: "Then where did those words of yours go, and the boasting of your bravery?! You had a sword in your hand and had a suitable opportunity, yet you could not kill Muhammad." He said: "You speak the truth, the matter was just as you say, but I saw a tall, white-clothed man who struck my chest with his hand so that my back shook, and I understood that this person was nothing other than an angel, and so I chose Islam. Now, by Allah, I will not incite people against him." After these discussions he called his relatives to Islam, and this noble verse was revealed concerning this matter: يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ هَمَّ قَوْمٌ أَنْ يَبْسُطُوا إِلَيْكُمْ أَيْدِيَهُمْ فَكَفَّ أَيْدِيَهُمْ عَنْكُمْ [O you who believe! remember Allah's favor on you when a people had determined to stretch forth their hands towards you, but He withheld their hands from you].
