The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family): It is narrated from al-Kalbi: The Quraysh said to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): "You say: 'Musa (peace be upon him) had a staff which he would strike upon the rock and twelve springs would gush forth from it.' You say: 'Isa (peace be upon him) used to bring the dead back to life.' You say: 'The people of Thamud had a she-camel.' So you too bring us a miracle like theirs, so that we may affirm you." In reply he said: "What do you wish that I bring for you?" They said: "Turn the mountain of Safa into gold, and bring some of our dead back to life so that we may ask them whether you are upon truth or upon falsehood. Show us the angels so that they may testify to your messengership. Or bring Allah and the angels before us in ranks." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: "If I do some of these things, will you affirm me?" They said: "Yes, by Allah, all of us will follow you." The Muslims requested from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) that he send down these signs so that they might believe. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) stood up and supplicated that Allah turn the mountain of Safa into gold. Jibril descended and said: "If you wish, I will turn Safa into gold. But if they do not believe, I will punish them. And if you wish, I will leave them to themselves, so that whoever is of the people of repentance may repent." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) accepted the second proposal, and Allah revealed this verse.
