Imam Ali (peace be upon him): Then Allah, whose remembrance is majestic and honoured, on account of the vastness of His mercy and His compassion toward His creation, and because He knew that alterers would introduce changes into His Book, divided His speech into three kinds: one kind He made such that both the learned and the ignorant understand it; another kind He made such that only those with a purified mind, a refined perception and sound discernment understand — those whose breasts He Himself has opened to Islam; and yet another kind He made such that only Allah, His trustees, and those firmly rooted in knowledge — upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings — understand it ... "And Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and greet him with a [worthy] salutation, and submit completely [to his command]" (al-Ahzab/56). This verse has an outward meaning and an inward meaning. Its outward is where He said, "send blessings upon him," and its inward is where He said, "and submit completely [to his command]" — that is, submit to the one whom He made his executor (wasi) and successor, and whom He gave superiority over you, and submit to what He entrusted to him. This is among those verses whose interpretation, as I said, only those with refined perception, purified mind and sound discernment know. Likewise this saying of Allah the Exalted: سَلَامٌ عَلَی إِلْ یَاسِینَ [Peace be upon the family of Yasin] (al-Saffat/130), for Allah named the noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) by this name and said: یس* وَ الْقُرْآنِ الْحَکِیمِ* إِنَّکَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِینَ [Ya-Sin. By the wise Quran. Indeed, you are among the messengers] (Ya-Sin/1-3), because He knew that they would drop His words — namely "peace be upon the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)" — just as they dropped other words. All the while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) kept close company with them, drew them near, and seated them on his right and left, until Allah the Mighty and Majestic commanded him to keep them at a distance and said: وَ اهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِیلًا [And avoid them with a becoming avoidance].
