Imam Rida (peace be upon him): Abd al-Aziz ibn Muslim narrated: We were in Marw during the time of Imam Rida (peace be upon him). On a Friday, in the early days of our arrival in Marw, we had gathered in the great mosque of Marw, when the discussion turned to the matter of imamah and the great disagreement people had about it. I went to the presence of my master and mawla, Imam Rida (peace be upon him), and related to him what people were saying and disputing. He smiled and said: "O Abd al-Aziz! The people are ignorant and have been deceived in their religion. Allah did not take His Prophet from this world until He had perfected the religion for him and revealed the Quran to him — in which is the detailed exposition of every thing. The lawful and the unlawful, the punishments, the rulings, and all that people need, He explained completely in the Quran ... The Imam is the unique one of his age; no one can approach his rank and no scholar reaches his level, and no substitute can be found for him ... May Allah destroy them; how are they turned away from the truth?! (Tawba/30). They have attempted a difficult climb and uttered a great lie and have gone far astray. They have fallen into bewilderment and confusion, and knowingly abandoned the Imam. Satan had adorned their deeds for them, and so he barred them from the way (of Allah) while they were seeing (Ankabut/38). They knowingly turned away from the one whom Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his family) had chosen ... until they became the ones addressed by the Quran: Do they not reflect on the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?! (Muhammad/24). And also: Allah has set a seal upon their hearts, and for this reason they know nothing! (Tawba/93). Or that they said: 'We heard'! But in reality they did not hear! The worst of creatures with Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not think. And had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear [the word of truth]; but [given the state they are in], if He were to make them hear the truth, they would turn away in refusal (Anfal/23,21). And they said: We heard and disobeyed (Baqara/93). Rather, this is the bounty of Allah, which He grants to whomever He wills [and considers deserving], and Allah is the possessor of great bounty! (Jumu'a/4)."
