The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): When the verse لَها سَبْعَةُ أَبْوابٍ لِکُلِّ بابٍ مِنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَقْسُومٌ [It has seven gates; for every gate there is an appointed portion of them] (Hijr/44) was revealed, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) wept intensely, and his companions wept along with his weeping, while they did not know what verse Jibra'il had brought down upon him, nor could any of them speak to him [and ask the cause of his weeping]. It was the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his family) habit that whenever he saw Fatimah (peace be upon her) he would be gladdened by seeing her. So one of the companions went to the door of Fatimah's (peace be upon her) house and found her grinding barley, and as she did so she was saying: وَ ما عِنْدَ اللهِ خَیْرٌ وَ أَبْقی [And that which is with Allah is better and more lasting] (Qasas/60). He greeted Fatimah (peace be upon her) and informed her of the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his family) weeping. Fatimah (peace be upon her) arose and covered herself with an old cloak she had, which was patched in twelve places with palm-fibre. When she came out of the house, Salman al-Farisi (may Allah have mercy on him) looked at the cloak and wept and said: "Alas for the grief and sorrow! The daughters of Caesar and Chosroes wear brocade and silk, while the daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) has an old woollen cloak patched in twelve places!" When Fatimah (peace be upon her) came in to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), she said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)! Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) was astonished at my garment. By the One who sent you with the truth, for five years now, Ali (peace be upon him) and I have had nothing but a single sheepskin on which our camel eats fodder during the day, and when night falls we spread it out as our bedding; and our pillow is of hide stuffed inside with palm-fibre." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: "O Salman (may Allah have mercy on him)! My daughter is among the foremost [in renouncing the world and turning toward Allah]." Then Fatimah (peace be upon her) said: "Dear father, may my soul be your ransom! What is it that has driven you to weep?" The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) recited to her the two verses which Jibra'il had brought down. Fatimah (peace be upon her) [upon hearing them] fell on her face, saying: "Woe! Woe to whoever enters Hell!" When Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) heard this, he said: "Would that I were a sheep for my family, so they might eat my flesh and tear my skin, and I would not have heard mention of the Fire." Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Would that my mother had been barren and had not given birth to me, so I would not have heard mention of the Fire." Miqdad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Would that I were a bird in a barren wilderness, with no reckoning or punishment awaiting me, and I would not have heard mention of the Fire." And Ali (peace be upon him) said: "Would that wild beasts had torn my flesh to pieces, and would that my mother had not given birth to me, so I would not have heard mention of the Fire." Then he placed his hand upon his head and began to weep, saying: "Alas for the distance of the journey of the Hereafter! Alas for the scantness of provision for the journey of the Resurrection! The people of Hell go on and are bewildered in Hell and are snatched away by the hounds of Hell; they are sick, but no one visits them; they are wounded, but their wounds are not treated; they are captives, but their captivity has no end. From the Fire they eat and from it they drink, and among its layers they are turned about; whereas in the world they wore [garments of] cotton and linen, [in Hell] they shall wear garments cut out from fire; and in the world they used to embrace their wives, but [in Hell] they shall be paired with satans."
