The Messenger (peace be upon him and his family): Zayd ibn Arqam said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, he stopped at the place of Ghadir Khumm ... The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: O people, you are too many to give me the pledge of allegiance with a single hand at one time, and Allah the Mighty and Majestic has commanded me to take from your tongues acknowledgement of what I have established concerning Ali (peace be upon him) and the Imams after him (regarding their being the Commander of the Faithful) ... Now say: "In this matter we have obeyed Allah and you, and likewise upon you is [obedience to] Ali and Hasan and Husayn and the Imams whom you have mentioned, on the covenant and pledge which has been taken for Ali (peace be upon him) from our hearts, souls, tongues and hands. Whoever has grasped these two by hand and acknowledged with the tongue, we will not want anything other than this matter, and we never see in ourselves that we would wish to turn back from our pledge, and we will convey this matter on your behalf to our children and to our relatives, near and far, and take Allah as witness over what we say, and Allah's witnessing is sufficient." And you yourselves are also witnesses over what we say, and likewise every being that obeys Allah, whether manifest or hidden, and also Allah's angels and His soldiers and His servants are among the witnesses, and Allah is greater than every witness. O people, what do you say? Certainly Allah knows every voice and whatever passes within human beings: فَمَنِ اهْتَدَی فَلِنَفْسِهِ وَ مَن ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا یَضِلُّ عَلَیْهَا [So whoever is guided, it is only for his own soul, and whoever goes astray, only to its detriment does he go astray].
