Ibn Abbas (may Allah have mercy on him): When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) brought Hajar and Ismail (peace be upon him) to Mecca and settled them there, some time passed and a tribe called "Jurhum" came down and settled in that place (beside the water of Zamzam). [Later] Ismail (peace be upon him) married a girl from that tribe. Then Hajar passed away. At that time Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked Sarah's permission to go to Hajar and Ismail (peace be upon him); Sarah gave him permission but stipulated that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) should not dismount from his horse and should not stay there. So Ibrahim (peace be upon him) came to Mecca while Hajar had passed away; he went to Ismail (peace be upon him), [and when he did not find him at home] he said to his wife: "Where is your husband?" That woman said: "He is not here, he has gone outside the sanctuary to hunt and is hunting, then he will return." Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to that woman: "Do you have anything with you to offer me as hospitality?" She said: "I have nothing. And there is no one either [to help me]." Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to her: "When your husband comes, convey my greeting to him and tell him to change the threshold of his door." Ibrahim (peace be upon him) left, and when Ismail (peace be upon him) came he recognized the scent of his father; he said to his wife: "Did anyone come to you?" His wife, with disdain and belittlement, said: "An old man of such-and-such description came to me." Ismail (peace be upon him) said: "Did he not say anything to you?" His wife said: "Yes! He conveyed greetings to you and said: change the threshold of your door." [Ismail (peace be upon him) understood his father's allusion, and on account of that matter] he divorced that woman and took another wife. Then Ibrahim (peace be upon him) waited for years by the divine will and again asked Sarah's permission to visit Ismail (peace be upon him). Sarah gave him permission, but [this time too] stipulated that he should not dismount and should not stay. This time Ibrahim (peace be upon him) came until he reached the door of Ismail's (peace be upon him) house; he said to Ismail's (peace be upon him) wife: "Where is your husband?" That woman said: "My husband has gone outside the sanctuary to hunt and, Allah willing, will return soon. May Allah have mercy on you, enter our home." [Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not enter the house because of Sarah's stipulation and] asked: "Do you have anything with which to offer hospitality?" Ismail's (peace be upon him) wife said: "Of course!" and then brought some milk and meat for Ibrahim (peace be upon him); Ibrahim (peace be upon him) then prayed for blessing upon them. If that day Ismail's (peace be upon him) wife had brought bread, wheat, barley or dates, through Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) prayer most of that land would have been filled with wheat, barley or dates. [After the meal] Ismail's (peace be upon him) wife said: "Dismount so that I may wash your head." But Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not dismount [and while still mounted] went beside the Maqam, and she placed it beside the right stirrup of the horse; then he placed his right foot upon it and the mark of his foot remained on that stone. In this way, Ismail's (peace be upon him) wife washed the right side of Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) head. Then [she turned and] placed the Maqam beside the left stirrup and he placed his left foot upon it, and Ismail's (peace be upon him) wife washed the left side of his head, and the mark of his left foot remained on the stone. [When the washing was finished] Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to her: "Convey greetings to your husband and tell him: the threshold of your house is very firm and steady." When Ismail (peace be upon him) arrived, he found the scent of his father in the house. He said to his wife: "Did anyone come to you?" His wife said: "Yes! An old man who was the best of people in face and the most fragrant of them said such-and-such to me and I said such-and-such to him; and I washed his head [and offered him hospitality] and this is the mark of his foot which has remained on the Maqam." Ismail (peace be upon him) said: "He was my father Ibrahim (peace be upon him)."
