Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): Allah mocks them in the hereafter in this way: when He places them in the abode of curse and disgrace and torments them with the various strange kinds of punishment, He places the believers in the gardens of paradise beside the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), who is Allah's chosen one. [Allah] informs the believers of the state of those who used to mock them in the world, so that they may see them in strange curses and diverse torments. The joy of the people of paradise, when they see them in this state and rebuke and reproach them, is like their joy at enjoying the blessings of paradise. The believers know the names and attributes of those disbelieving hypocrites. The disbelievers and hypocrites also look and see the believers whom, in the world, they had mocked on account of accepting the wilayah of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and Ali (peace be upon him) and their household (peace be upon them), enjoying various kinds of divine blessings and gifts. The believers, while looking down upon those disbelievers and hypocrites, say: "O so-and-so! O so-and-so! O so-and-so"! And they call them by their names and ask them why they remain in the stations of disgrace and humiliation, and how they are. Come to us so that we may open for you the gates of paradise so that you may be released from your punishment and join us. They answer: "Woe to us! How can we do this and be freed"? At that moment the believers say: "Look at these gates". The disbelievers look at the opened gates of paradise and imagine that those gates open toward them and toward the hell in which they are being punished, and that they can be saved through them. So they begin to flounder in the sea of hamim (scalding boiling water) of hell and run in the presence of the guardians of hell; while the guardians of hell strike them with pillars, maces and their whips; yet the disbelievers keep running toward the gates and taste these punishments; the hypocrites continue this action until they are able to reach those gates, but at that moment they find the gates closed, and the guardians pound them with their pillars and drive them back into hell; at that moment they see the believers seated on their couches, sneering at them and mocking them. This is the meaning of the word of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, who says: فَالْیَوْمَ الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْکُفَّارِ یَضْحَکُونَ عَلَی الْأَرائِکِ یَنْظُرُونَ [So today those who believe shall laugh at the disbelievers, on couches, looking on.]
