... فَاعْرِفْ أَشْبَاهَ الْأَحْبَارِ وَ الرُّهْبَانِ الَّذِینَ سَارُوا بِکِتْمَانِ الْکِتَابِ وَ تَحْرِیفِهِ فَما رَبِحَتْ تِجارَتُهُمْ وَ ما کانُوا مُهْتَدِینَ ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ أَشْبَاهَهُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّهًِْ الَّذِینَ أَقَامُوا حُرُوفَ الْکِتَابِ وَ حَرَّفُوا حُدُودَهُ فَهُمْ مَعَ السَّادَهًِْ وَ الْکُبُرَّهًِْ فَإِذَا تَفَرَّقَتْ قَادَهًُْ الْأَهْوَاءِ کَانُوا مَعَ أَکْثَرِهِمْ دُنْیَا وَ ذَلِکَ مَبْلَغُهُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ لَا یَزَالُونَ کَذَلِکَ فِی طَبَعٍ وَ طَمَعٍ لَا یَزَالُ یُسْمَعُ صَوْتُ إِبْلِیسَ عَلَی أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ بِبَاطِلٍ کَثِیرٍ یَصْبِرُ مِنْهُمُ الْعُلَمَاءُ عَلَی الْأَذَی وَ التَّعْنِیفِ وَ یَعِیبُونَ عَلَی الْعُلَمَاءِ بِالتَّکْلِیفِ وَ الْعُلَمَاءُ فِی أَنْفُسِهِمْ خَانَهًٌْ إِنْ کَتَمُوا النَّصِیحَهًَْ إِنْ رَأَوْا تَائِهاً ضَالًّا لَا یَهْدُونَهُ أَوْ مَیِّتاً لَا یُحْیُونَهُ فَبِئْسَ مَا یَصْنَعُونَ لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَکَ وَ تَعَالَی أَخَذَ عَلَیْهِمُ الْمِیثَاقَ فِی الْکِتَابِ أَنْ یَأْمُرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ بِمَا أُمِرُوا بِهِ وَ أَنْ یَنْهَوْا عَمَّا نُهُوا عَنْهُ وَ أَنْ یَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَی الْبِرِّ وَ التَّقْوَی وَ لَا یَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَی الْإِثْمِ وَ الْعُدْوَانِ فَالْعُلَمَاءُ مِنَ الْجُهَّالِ فِی جَهْدٍ وَ جِهَادٍ إِنْ وَعَظَتْ قَالُوا طَغَتْ وَ إِنْ عَلَّمُوا الْحَقَّ الَّذِی تَرَکُوا قَالُوا: خَالَفَتْ، وَ إِنِ اعْتَزَلُوهُمْ قَالُوا: فَارَقَتْ، وَ إِنْ قَالُوا هَاتُوا بُرْهَانَکُمْ عَلَی مَا تُحَدِّثُونَ قَالُوا: نَافَقَتْ، وَ إِنْ أَطَاعُوهُمْ قَالُوا: عَصَتِ اللَّهَ عَزَّوَجَلَّ. فَهَلَکَ جُهَّالٌ فِیمَا لَا یَعْلَمُونَ أُمِّیُّونَ فِیمَا یَتْلُونَ یُصَدِّقُونَ بِالْکِتَابِ عِنْدَ التَّعْرِیفِ وَ یُکَذِّبُونَ بِهِ عِنْدَ التَّحْرِیفِ فَلَا یُنْکِرُونَ أُولَئِکَ أَشْبَاهُ الْأَحْبَارِ وَ الرُّهْبَانِ قَادَهًٌْ فِی الْهَوَی سَادَهًٌْ فِی الرَّدَی.
امام باقر (علیه السلام) ... کسانی را که به احبار (دانشمندان یهود) و رهبان (دانشمندان مسیحی) شباهت دارند، [از بین مسلمانان] بشناس، روش آنان کتمان‌کردن کتاب خدا و تحریف آن است؛ که از تجارت خود سودی نبرده و هدایت نشده‌اند. افراد مشابه آنها را در این امّت (اسلام) بشناس؛ آنان به تحریف الفاظ کتاب قیام کرده و حدود و مقرّراتش را تحریف می‌کنند؛ اینان با رهبران و بزرگان [دنیا و زمامداران] همکاری می‌کنند و چون اختلافی در میان رهبران هواپرست افتد با آن دسته همکاری می‌کنند که دنیای بیشتری دارند؛ اندازه و ارزش علم و دانش ایشان این است؛ همواره گرفتار طبع شیطانی و آلوده‌ی طمع خویشند و پیوسته آواز شیطان از زبانشان شنیده می‌شود که فراوان سخن باطل می‌گویند. علما و دانشمندان حقیقی نیز در برابر آزار و زورگویی آنان صبر پیشه می‌سازند [امّا] در مقابل، آنان بر این علمای بزرگوار [به‌خاطر اینکه آنان را به حق وادار کرده و از باطل جلوگیری می‌نمایند] خرده می‌گیرند؛ در حالی‌که علما، اگر فرد سرگردان گمراهی را ببینند ولی او را راهنمایی نکنند و یا او را مانند شخص مرده‌ای یافته ولی او را زنده نکنند (منظور، مردن و زنده‌کردن قلب است)، خود را خیانتکار می‌شمارند. [آن دانشمندانی که به تحریف دین می‌پردازند و مردم را هدایت نمی‌کنند]، چه بدکاری انجام می‌دهند! زیرا خدای تبارک‌وتعالی از ایشان در کتاب خود پیمان محکم گرفته که مردم را به کار خوب و به آنچه به آنها امر شده، دعوت کنند و دیگران را از آنچه خود از آن نهی شده‌اند، بازدارند و در نیکی و پرهیزگاری همکار و یاری‌رسان یکدیگر باشند و در گناهکاری و زورگویی کمک ندهند. پس این علماء همیشه با نادانان در کوشش و مبارزه‌اند؛ اگر علما، نادانان را پند دهند مردم جاهل می‌گویند: «سرکشی می‌کنند»؛ و اگر حقّی را که ادا نکرده‌اند، به یادشان آورده و آگاهشان سازند، می‌گویند: «با مردم مخالفت می‌کنند» و اگر از آنها کناره بگیرند می‌گویند: «علمای خود را از جماعت مسلمانان جدا کرده‌اند» و اگر علما به آنها بگویند دلیل خود را بر این سخن و این تهمتی که بر آنان می‌زنید بیاورید، می‌گویند: «آنها منافق شدند» و اگر علما پیروی آنها را کنند، می‌گویند: «آنان خدای عزّوجلّ را نافرمانی کردند» جاهلان به‌خاطر آنچه نمی‌دانند هلاک شدند و نسبت به آنچه که [از کتاب خدا] می‌خوانند، نادانند. وقتی کسی از قرآن تعریف می‌کند، او را تصدیق می‌کنند و وقتی دیگری قرآن را تحریف می‌کند، او را انکار نمی‌کنند و در واقع با تکذیب همراهی می‌کنند. اینان همانند احبار (دانشمندان یهود) و رهبان (دانشمندان نصاری) هستند که رهبران هواپرستی و پیشوایان هلاکت و نابودی‌اند.
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): ... Recognise [from among the Muslims] those who resemble the ahbar (Jewish scholars) and the ruhban (Christian monks); their way is to conceal the Book of Allah and to distort it; they have gained no profit from their trade and have not been guided. Recognise those in this ummah (of Islam) who are similar to them; they set about distorting the words of the Book and they distort its limits and ordinances; these people cooperate with the leaders and the great ones [of the world and the rulers], and when a dispute arises among the whim-following leaders they cooperate with the group that has more of the world; that is the extent and worth of their knowledge; they are constantly caught in a satanic nature and defiled with their own greed, and the voice of Satan is continually heard from their tongues, for they utter much falsehood in abundance. The true scholars and the learned, on the other hand, exercise patience against their harm and coercion, [yet] in return these people find fault with these noble scholars [because they compel them to the truth and prevent them from falsehood]; while the scholars, if they see a bewildered, misguided person and do not guide him, or find someone like a dead person and do not bring him to life (what is meant is the death and revival of the heart), consider themselves traitors. [Those scholars who engage in distorting the religion and do not guide the people] — what an evil deed they do! For Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has taken a firm covenant from them in His Book that they should invite people to good and to what they have been commanded, and forbid others from what they themselves have been forbidden, and cooperate with one another in goodness and piety, and not assist one another in sin and aggression. So these scholars are always in effort and struggle with the ignorant; if the scholars admonish the ignorant, the ignorant people say: "They are being rebellious"; and if they remind them of a right which they have not fulfilled and make them aware, they say: "They are opposing the people"; and if the scholars withdraw from them, they say: "They have separated their scholars from the community of the Muslims"; and if the scholars say to them, bring your proof for this speech and this accusation you level against them, they say: "They have become hypocrites"; and if the scholars follow them, they say: "They have disobeyed Allah the Mighty and Majestic". The ignorant perished because of what they did not know, and they are ignorant of what they recite [of the Book of Allah]. When someone praises the Quran, they affirm him, and when another distorts the Quran, they do not deny him and in fact they accompany the denial. These people are like the ahbar (Jewish scholars) and the ruhban (Christian scholars), who are the leaders of whim-following and the chiefs of ruin and destruction.
ઇમામ બાકિર (અલયહિસ્સલામ) ... [મુસલમાનોમાંથી] તે લોકોને ઓળખો કે જેઓ અહબાર (યહૂદી આલિમો) અને રુહબાન (ખ્રિસ્તી આલિમો) જેવા છે; તેમની રીત અલ્લાહની કિતાબને છુપાવવાની અને તેમાં ફેરફાર કરવાની છે; જેઓએ પોતાના વેપારથી કોઈ નફો મેળવ્યો નથી અને હિદાયત પામ્યા નથી. આ ઉમ્મત (ઇસ્લામ)માં તેમના જેવા લોકોને ઓળખો; તેઓ કિતાબના શબ્દોમાં ફેરફાર કરવા માટે ઊભા થાય છે અને તેની હદો અને નિયમોમાં ફેરફાર કરે છે; આ લોકો [દુનિયાના] આગેવાનો અને મોટા [શાસકો] સાથે સહકાર કરે છે અને જ્યારે ખ્વાહિશપરસ્ત આગેવાનો વચ્ચે મતભેદ થાય છે ત્યારે તે જૂથ સાથે સહકાર કરે છે જેમની પાસે વધારે દુનિયા છે; તેમના ઇલ્મ અને જ્ઞાનની હદ અને કિંમત આ છે; તેઓ હંમેશા શેતાની સ્વભાવમાં ફસાયેલા અને પોતાના લોભથી અપવિત્ર છે અને શેતાનનો અવાજ સતત તેમની જીભથી સંભળાય છે, કેમ કે તેઓ ઘણી બાતિલ વાતો કરે છે. સાચા આલિમો અને ઉલમા તેમની તકલીફ અને ઝુલ્મ સામે સબ્ર કરે છે [પરંતુ] બદલામાં આ લોકો આ મહાન આલિમો પર [એ કારણે કે તેઓ તેમને હક તરફ પ્રેરિત કરે છે અને બાતિલથી રોકે છે] દોષ કાઢે છે; જ્યારે કે આલિમો, જો કોઈ ભટકેલા ગુમરાહને જુએ પરંતુ તેને માર્ગદર્શન ન આપે અથવા તેને મરેલા વ્યક્તિની જેમ પામે પરંતુ તેને જીવિત ન કરે (અહીં મતલબ દિલનું મરવું અને જીવવું છે), તો પોતાને ખિયાનતકાર ગણે છે. [તે આલિમો કે જેઓ દીનમાં ફેરફાર કરે છે અને લોકોને હિદાયત નથી આપતા], કેવો ખરાબ કાર્ય કરે છે! કેમ કે અલ્લાહ તબારક વ તઆલાએ તેમની પાસેથી પોતાની કિતાબમાં મજબૂત વચન લીધું છે કે લોકોને સારા કાર્ય તરફ અને જેનો તેમને હુકમ આપવામાં આવ્યો છે તે તરફ બોલાવે અને બીજાઓને તે વસ્તુઓથી રોકે જેનાથી પોતાને રોકવામાં આવ્યા છે અને નેકી અને પરહેજગારીમાં એકબીજાને સહકાર અને મદદ કરે અને ગુનાહ અને ઝુલ્મમાં મદદ ન કરે. તો આ આલિમો હંમેશા જાહિલો સાથે કોશિશ અને સંઘર્ષમાં છે; જો આલિમો જાહિલોને નસીહત આપે તો જાહિલ લોકો કહે છે: "સરકશી કરે છે"; અને જો કોઈ હકને જે તેઓએ અદા કર્યો નથી તેની યાદ અપાવે અને જાગૃત કરે, તો કહે છે: "લોકોનો વિરોધ કરે છે" અને જો તેમનાથી અલગ થઈ જાય તો કહે છે: "પોતાના આલિમોને મુસલમાનોના સમૂહથી અલગ કરી દીધા" અને જો આલિમો તેમને કહે કે આ વાત અને આ તોહમત પર જે તમે લગાવો છો તેનો દલીલ લાવો, તો કહે છે: "તેઓ મુનાફિક બની ગયા" અને જો આલિમો તેમનું અનુસરણ કરે તો કહે છે: "તેઓએ અલ્લાહ અઝ્ઝ વ જલ્લની નાફરમાની કરી". જાહિલો જે નથી જાણતા તેના કારણે હલાક થયા અને [અલ્લાહની કિતાબમાંથી] જે વાંચે છે તે અંગે નાદાન છે. જ્યારે કોઈ કુરઆનની પ્રશંસા કરે તો તેને સાચો ઠરાવે છે અને જ્યારે બીજો કુરઆનમાં ફેરફાર કરે તો તેને નકારતા નથી અને હકીકતમાં જૂઠલાવવામાં તેની સાથે થઈ જાય છે. આ લોકો અહબાર (યહૂદી આલિમો) અને રુહબાન (ખ્રિસ્તી આલિમો) જેવા છે કે જેઓ ખ્વાહિશપરસ્તીના આગેવાનો અને હલાકત તથા વિનાશના પેશવા છે.
