Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) made the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), stand [in that place] on the day of Ghadir [and delivered the sermon of Ghadir], Umar ibn al-Khattab rose from among that gathering and said: "Congratulations, son of Abu Talib! You have become my master and the master of every believing man and woman!" Then, while this covenant and pledge had been taken from them with the utmost emphasis and firmness, they left that place and dispersed. After that event, a group of the tyrannical rebels among that people conspired among themselves and agreed, saying: "If something happens to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and he departs this world, we will certainly push this matter away from Ali (peace be upon him) and not let this position remain for him". But Allah the Exalted was aware of what was in their hearts and what passed within them. They would come to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and say: "Indeed you have made Ali (peace be upon him), before Allah, yourself and us, the most beloved of creation, and you have relied on him to protect us from the rule of the unjust and the oppressors, and you have sufficed us in these matters". This was while Allah the Exalted knew that in their hearts they held the opposite of what they said, and in secret they were plotting, and they were firm in enmity toward him, and determined to remove this worthy man from this matter. So Allah informed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) of their intent and said: "O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)! Some of the people say we believe in the Allah who commanded you to make Ali (peace be upon him) the Imam, leader and guide of your nation; yet they do not believe in this matter (the wilayah of Ali, peace be upon him); rather they have conspired to kill you and him, and have prepared themselves to disobey Ali (peace be upon him) after your death".
