Ali ibn Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him): This verse was revealed concerning Abu Dharr and Uthman ibn Affan. The reason Uthman exiled Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) to Rabadha was that Abu Dharr, while ill and leaning on his staff, came in to see Uthman. Before Uthman lay one hundred thousand dirhams that had been brought to him from certain provinces, and his companions had gathered around him, looking at it with greedy eyes, hoping he would distribute it among them. Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) said to Uthman, "What is this wealth?" Uthman replied, "One hundred thousand dirhams brought to me from certain provinces. I intend to add an equal amount to it, and then decide what to do with it." Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) asked, "O Uthman, which is greater: one hundred thousand dirhams, or four dinars?" He replied, "One hundred thousand dirhams, of course." Abu Dharr said, "Do you not remember that you and I once came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) one evening and found him sorrowful and grieved? We greeted him, but he did not return the greeting. Then, when we came to him the next morning, we found him laughing and joyful. We said to him, 'May our fathers and mothers be sacrificed for you! Last night when we came to you, we found you sorrowful and grieved, and today we have returned to you and find you laughing and joyful.' He (peace be upon him and his family) said, 'Yes! Four dinars from the Muslims' revenue remained with me that I had not yet distributed, and I feared that death might overtake me while it was still with me. Today I have distributed it, and through that I have found relief.'"
