Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him): When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) entered Medina, a group of Jews came to him and said: '... O Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)! Which angel brings to you from Allah what you say?' He said: 'Jibril (peace be upon him).' Ibn Suriya (one of the Jews) said: 'That angel among the angels is our enemy, because he brings down killing, hardship and war, while our messenger is Mika'il (peace be upon him), who brings joy and ease. So if the angel who came to you were Mika'il, we would believe in you, because Mika'il strengthens our kingdom and Jibril (peace be upon him) destroys it, and for this reason he is our enemy.' Then Salman al-Farisi (may Allah have mercy on him) said to him: 'What is the beginning of his enmity with you?' He said: 'Yes, O Salman (may Allah have mercy on him)! He has shown enmity to us many times, and the most severe of his enmity with us is that Allah revealed to His prophets (peace be upon them) that Bayt al-Muqaddas would be destroyed at the hands of a man known as Bukhtnasr, and in his time, and He informed us of the time of its destruction; and Allah brings about matter after matter, and He erases what He wills and confirms what He wills. So when we became aware of the time of the destruction of Bayt al-Muqaddas, our predecessors chose a man from the strongest and most virtuous of the Bani Isra'il, who was considered among their prophets (peace be upon them), called Danyal, and sent him after Bukhtnasr to kill him, and they sent much wealth with him to spend on that path. So when he set out in search of him, he met him in Babil as a weak and wretched boy who had no strength or power. So our man (Danyal) seized him to kill him, (but) Jibril (peace be upon him) turned him away and said to our man: "If your Lord is the one who has commanded your destruction, then He will not give you power over Bukhtnasr; and if that were not so, then why are you killing him?" So our man affirmed him and let Bukhtnasr go and returned to us and informed us of that, and Bukhtnasr became strong and became king, and made war on us and destroyed Bayt al-Muqaddas. So for this reason we consider Jibril (peace be upon him) an enemy, and Mika'il (peace be upon him) is the enemy of Jibril (peace be upon him).' Then Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 'O Ibn Suriya! With this manner of thinking, which is far from the way of proper reflection, you have gone astray ...' Then Salman (may Allah have mercy on him) continued: 'I bear witness that indeed whoever shows enmity to Jibril (peace be upon him) has shown enmity to Mika'il (peace be upon him); for indeed both of them show enmity to whoever shows enmity to the two of them, and both of them show friendship to whoever shows friendship to the two of them.' At this point Allah the Exalted revealed the verse قُلْ مَنْ کانَ عَدُوًّا لِجِبْرِیلَ [Say: whoever is an enemy to Jibril] ... in accordance with the words of Salman (may Allah have mercy on him), and [He said]: whoever shows enmity to Jibril (peace be upon him), who supports the friends of Allah against His enemies and brings down the virtues of Ali (peace be upon him), the wali of Allah, from Him — فَإِنَّهُ نَزَّلَهُ [for indeed he brought it down] — for indeed Jibril (peace be upon him) brought down this Qur'an upon your heart by the permission and command of the Lord, مُصَدِّقاً لِما بَیْنَ یَدَیْهِ [confirming what is before it], which confirms the other divine books, وَ هُدیً مِنَ الضَّلَالَةِ وَ بُشْری لِلْمُؤْمِنِینَ [and a guidance from misguidance and good news for the believers], and He gives good news to the believers that Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) is the Prophet, Ali (peace be upon him) is the wali, and the Imams (peace be upon them) after him — all of them are truly the friends of Allah, if [the believers] die upon their wilayah — Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), Ali (peace be upon him) and their pure family. [This good news is given to them by Allah.] Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'O Salman (may Allah have mercy on him)! Indeed Allah has confirmed your words and given success to your view.'
