The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family): The people of the Fire, when they enter it and see its humiliation and its terrors and become aware of its punishment and its retribution ... when they despair of their Master, the Lord of the worlds — who in the world was the most insignificant thing in their eyes and each of them preferred his own whims over Him — while His existence had been established for them rationally and by transmission through the guides to the path of salvation, and He had made them understand through the tongue of circumstance that by their own deeds they were casting themselves into the punishment, and the door of acceptance is closed upon the disbelievers with death forever and ever, and He had said to them at times when they were in the worldly life among the accountable, through the clear and evident tongue of circumstance: 'Suppose that you did not believe me in this statement — do you not allow that I might be among the truthful? Then how did you turn away from me and bear witness to rejecting me and rejecting the messengers who confirmed me? I warn you against this awful, dreaded harm. Have you not heard of the multitude of messengers and the repetition of the messages?' Then Allah, mighty is His majesty, repeated their entry into the Fire and said: أَ لَمْ تَکُنْ آیاتِی تُتْلی عَلَیْکُمْ فَکُنْتُمْ بِها تُکَذِّبُونَ [Were not My verses recited to you? But you used to reject them]. So the disbelievers said: رَبَّنا غَلَبَتْ عَلَیْنا شِقْوَتُنا وَ کُنَّا قَوْماً ضالِّینَ رَبَّنا أَخْرِجْنا مِنْها فَإِنْ عُدْنا فَإِنَّا ظالِمُونَ [Our Lord! our wretchedness overcame us and we were an erring people. Our Lord! take us out of it; then if we return, we shall indeed be unjust]. They remain for forty years in humiliation and abasement, and in the punishment of the Fire no reply is given to them and no one speaks with them. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, answers them: Remain in the Fire and do not speak. He said: at that point they despair of any relief or ease, and the gates of Hell are shut upon them, and their mourning of destruction and their groaning and wailing and shrieking become eternal.
