Imam Ali (peace be upon him): It is narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) sent a messenger to Bishr ibn Utarid al-Tamimi to deliver a message to him because of something [offensive] that had reached him. The messenger of Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) met Bishr in the tribe of Bani Asad and seized him; Nu'aym ibn Dajaja al-Asadi rose, came toward him, and rescued him (Bishr) [from the hand of Amir al-Mu'minin's messenger]. Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) sent [people] after him. They brought him, and he ordered that he be flogged. Nu'aym said: "By Allah! Remaining with you is humiliation and disgrace, and separation from you is unbelief." When [the Imam] heard this from him, he said to him: "O Nu'aym! We have pardoned you; for Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِی هِیَ أَحْسَنُ السَّیِّئَةَ [Repel evil by what is best]. Your statement that remaining with me is humiliation is an evil deed you have earned, but your statement that separation from me is unbelief is a good deed you have earned — this (good) in exchange for that (evil)." Then he ordered that he be released.
