Imam Ali (peace be upon him)- Asbagh ibn Nubata al-Abdi said: "When Ibn Muljam, the accursed, struck Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), a group of us friends went in the morning to visit him. I was there, along with Harith, Suwayd ibn Ghafala, and a number of others. When we arrived, we sat at the door of the house, and hearing the sound of weeping, we wept. Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) came out to us and said: 'Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) tells you to return to your homes.' Everyone left, but I stayed. As the weeping from inside the house grew stronger, I too wept. Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) came out once more and said: 'Did I not tell you to leave?' I said: 'By Allah, no, O son of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)! Neither will my soul allow me nor do my legs have the strength to walk away until I see Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him),' and then I continued weeping. Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) went back inside; but it was not long before he returned and said: 'Come in!' I entered upon Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) and saw that his head was bound with a yellow turban stained with blood, and he was resting against the wall. The colour of his face was so pale that one could not tell whether the yellow of the turban was more yellow or the colour of his face. I fell at his feet and, kissing him, wept bitterly. He said to me: 'Do not weep, Asbagh, for by Allah, there is no distance between me and Paradise.' I said: 'May I be your ransom! By Allah, I know you are going to Paradise, but my weeping is because I am losing you. O Amir al-Mu'minin! May I be your ransom! Tell me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), for I suspect that from this day onward I shall never hear another hadith from you.' He said: 'Yes, O Asbagh! One day the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) called me to him and said to me: "O Ali (peace be upon him)! Go until you reach my mosque, then ascend my pulpit and call the people to yourself. Praise and thank Allah, and send abundant blessings upon me, and then say: O people! I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) to you, and he says to you: The curse of Allah, the curse of the angels brought near, and the curse of the sent prophets (peace be upon them), and my curse be upon anyone who attributes himself to other than his own father, or accepts the wilayah of one other than his rightful master, or wrongs a labourer whom he has hired of his wage." So I went to the mosque and ascended the pulpit, and when the Quraysh and everyone in the mosque saw me, they came toward me. Then I praised and thanked Allah and sent abundant blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and then I said: "O people! I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) to you, and he says to you: The curse of Allah, the curse of His angels brought near, the curse of Allah's sent prophets (peace be upon them), and my curse be upon anyone who attributes himself to other than his own father, or accepts the wilayah of one other than his rightful master, or wrongs a labourer whom he has hired of his wage." He said: 'None of those people spoke except Umar ibn al-Khattab, and he alone said: "O Abu al-Hasan! You have delivered the message, but you have brought words that are not clear and need explanation and interpretation." I said: "I shall tell this to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)." I returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and informed him of what had happened. He said: "Return to my mosque and ascend my pulpit, then praise and thank Allah and send blessings upon me, and then say: O people! We do not bring you anything except that we have its interpretation (ta'wil) and explanation (tafsir) with us. Indeed, I am your father; indeed, I am your master (mawla); and indeed, I am your hired worker (ajir)."'"
