Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him): In Uyun al-Akhbar, in the account of Imam al-Rida's (peace be upon him) gathering with the people of [various] religions and those who discussed tawhid; the Imam said: "I will ask you about a matter." He said: "Go ahead, if I know I will answer." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "Do you not deny that Isa (peace be upon him) used to bring the dead to life by the permission of Allah?" The Catholicos said: "I do deny that, because whoever brings the dead to life, gives sight to the blind, and heals the leper, is worthy of being worshipped." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "Al-Yasa (Elisha) also did what Isa did; he walked on water, brought the dead to life, and healed the blind and the leper, yet his community did not take him as a god and no one worshipped him. The prophet Hizqil (Ezekiel) too did what Isa the son of Maryam (peace be upon him) did, and brought back to life thirty-five thousand people after their death, sixty years having passed since their death." Then he turned to Ras al-Jalut (the head of the Jews) and said: "Do you find these people in the Tawrat among the youth of the Children of Israel, whom Bukht-Nassar (Nebuchadnezzar), when he waged war on Bayt al-Maqdis and took them to Babil (Babylon), chose from among the captives of the Children of Israel? Allah sent Hizqil (peace be upon him) and he brought them back to life. This matter is in the Tawrat, and whoever denies it is a disbeliever." Ras al-Jalut answered: "I have heard it and I know that you speak the truth." Then the Imam (peace be upon him) said: "Now listen while I read that book." And he began to read from the Tawrat. The Jew was astonished at this recitation and marvelled at it. Then he turned to the Christian and said: "Were these people before Isa (peace be upon him), or was Isa (peace be upon him) before them?" He said: "They were before Isa (peace be upon him)." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "The Quraysh gathered before the noble Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and asked him to bring their dead back to life. The Prophet sent Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and said to him: 'Go with them to the graveyard, and call the names of these people in a loud voice — O so-and-so, so-and-so, so-and-so — and say: Muhammad the Messenger of Allah says, rise up by the permission of Allah!' They rose up while shaking the dust from their heads. The Quraysh began to ask them about their state." They told them that Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) had been raised as a Messenger. They said: "How we wish we had lived in his time so that we could believe in him." "And he healed the blind, the leper and the insane, and the beasts, the birds, the jinn and the devils spoke to him, yet we did not take our own Prophet as a lord besides Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Nor do we deny the merit of any of these [prophets] before Allah; but you, who consider Isa (peace be upon him) to be a god, must also consider Hizqil and al-Yasa to be gods, since they did the very same thing that Isa did."
