The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): At that very moment, two angels come to me; one is Ridwan, the keeper of Paradise, and the other is Malik, the keeper of Hell. Ridwan comes to me and greets me: السَّلَامُ عَلَیْکَ یَا نَبِیَّ اللهِ [Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah]. I return his greeting and ask, "Who are you, O sweet-scented, fair-faced angel who is noble and honoured before his Lord?" He says, "I am Ridwan, the keeper of Paradise. My Lord has commanded me to bring you the keys of Paradise. So take these keys, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family)!" I say, "I accept this from my Lord, and thanks and praise for this blessing and favour of His upon me are incumbent upon me. Hand these keys to my brother Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him)." Ridwan gives the keys to Ali (peace be upon him) and returns. Then Malik, the keeper of Hell, draws near and greets me and says: السلام علیکم یا حبیب الله [Peace be upon you, O beloved of Allah]. I say, "Peace be upon you, O angel — how difficult is your appearance and how ugly your face! Who are you?" He says, "I am Malik, the keeper of Hell; my Lord has commanded me to bring you the keys of Hell." I say, "I accept them from my Lord, and I give thanks and praise to Him for giving me such a blessing and singling me out with this excellence. Hand it to my brother Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him)." Malik gives the keys to Ali (peace be upon him). Then Malik returns, and Ali (peace be upon him), with the keys of Paradise and Hell in his hands, comes forward until he stands on the edge of Hell and takes its reins in his hand, while its fire blazes up and its burning and heat intensify, and it calls out loudly, "O Ali (peace be upon him)! Pass by me, for your light extinguishes my flame." Ali (peace be upon him) says to it, "Be still, O Hell! Release this one and let him go, for he is my friend and my Shia, and seize this one, for he is my enemy. Indeed, Hell on that day obeys the command of Ali (peace be upon him) more than the servant of any of you obeys the command of his master, so that if he wills he sends it in any direction, to the left or to the right, and indeed on that day Hell is more obedient to the command of Ali (peace be upon him) than all of creation, for Ali on that day is the divider of Paradise and Hell."
