Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him): In the chapter on the assembly of Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) with the people of the [various] religions and debates, it is reported that the Imam (peace be upon him) turned to the Ras al-Jalut [the head of the Jews] and said to him: "Will you begin and ask, or shall I question you?" He said: "I will ask, and I will not accept any proof from you except from the Tawrat, the Injil, the Zabur of Dawud (peace be upon him), or from what has come in the scriptures of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Musa (peace be upon him)." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "Do not accept any proof from me except what I speak from the tongue of Musa ibn Imran (peace be upon him) in the Tawrat, from the tongue of Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) in the Injil, and from the tongue of Dawud (peace be upon him) in the Zabur." Ras al-Jalut said: "From where do you establish the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)?" The Imam (peace be upon him) said: "Musa ibn Imran, Isa ibn Maryam, and Dawud (peace be upon him), who is the vicegerent of Allah upon the earth, all bore witness to his prophethood." He said to him: "Present the statement of Musa ibn Imran (peace be upon him) concerning this." The Imam (peace be upon him) said: "O Jew, do you know that Musa (peace be upon him) counseled the Children of Israel [and appointed a successor and a prophet after himself]? And he said to them: 'There will come to you a prophet from among your brethren; believe in him and listen to his words.' Do you know of any brethren for the Children of Israel other than the descendants of Isma'il (peace be upon him)? Are you aware of the nearness of Ya'qub (peace be upon him) to Isma'il (peace be upon him), and the relation between them through Ibrahim (peace be upon him)?" Ras al-Jalut said: "This is the word of Musa (peace be upon him), and we do not reject it." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said to him: "Did any prophet from the brethren of the Children of Israel come to you other than Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)?" He said: "No." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "Is this matter not established with you?" He said: "Yes, we accept it, but we would like you to establish this point for us from the Tawrat." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said to him: "Do you deny that the Tawrat says: 'A light came to you from the mountain of Tur Sinai, and shone upon us from the mountain of Sa'ir, and became manifest to us from the mountain of Faran'?" Ras al-Jalut said: "I know these words, but I do not know their interpretation." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "I shall inform you of their interpretation. As for his saying, 'A light came from the mountain of Tur Sinai,' that is the revelation of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, which He sent down upon Musa (peace be upon him) on the mountain of Tur Sinai. As for his saying, 'And shone upon us from the mountain of Sa'ir,' that is the mountain upon which Allah the Exalted sent revelation to Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) while he was upon it. As for his saying, 'And became manifest to us from the mountain of Faran,' the mountain of Faran is one of the mountains of Makkah, between which and Makkah is a distance of one day. And Sha'ya the Prophet (peace be upon him) said in the Tawrat concerning that which you and your companions hold: 'I saw two riders, for whom the earth was lit up; one of them was riding upon a donkey and the other upon a camel.' Do you know who was riding the donkey and who was riding the camel?" Ras al-Jalut said: "I do not know; inform me concerning them." He (peace be upon him) said: "The rider of the donkey is Isa (peace be upon him), and the rider of the camel is Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). Do you deny this from the Tawrat?" He said: "I do not deny it." Then Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "Do you know Hayquq the Prophet (peace be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, I know him." He (peace be upon him) said: "He said — and your book also speaks of it: 'Allah brought forth His signs from the mountain of Faran, and the heavens were filled with the glorification and praise of Ahmad (peace be upon him and his family) and his community; his mount is borne by the lands and the seas, and after the destruction of Bayt al-Maqdis he brings us a new book' — and by 'the book' he means the Quran. Do you know of this and believe in it?" Ras al-Jalut said: "Hayquq said this, and we do not deny it." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "And Dawud (peace be upon him) has also stated this in his Zabur, and you read [what is written]: 'O Allah, raise up the establisher of the Sunnah after the period of interval (fatrah).' Do you know of any prophet other than Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) who established the Sunnah after the period of interval?" Ras al-Jalut said: "This is the word of Dawud (peace be upon him); we are aware of it and we do not deny it, but what he meant by it is Isa (peace be upon him), and the time of Isa (peace be upon him) is the period of interval." Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: "You have erred. Isa (peace be upon him) did not oppose the Sunnah; rather, he was in accord with the Sunnah of the Tawrat until the time when Allah raised him up to Himself. And in the Injil it is mentioned that Ibn al-Barrah has departed and Faraqlita comes after him, and he is the one who will recount the tidings for you and interpret all matters for you, and he will bear witness [to my truthfulness] just as I have borne witness [to his truthfulness]; I was sent to you with parables [and rulings], and he [will come] with their ta'wil (interpretation). Do you believe in this that has come in the Injil?" He said: "Yes, I do not deny it."
